Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin

The Rotary Club of Ikeja, under Rotary International District 9111, has sensitised market women in Ikeja on proper waste management and recycling practices.

The sensitisation exercise, organised in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) was held at Ipodo Market, Ikeja.

Speaking during the event, President, Ikeja Rotary Club, Olanrewaju Lawal, said waste should not only be discarded but managed responsibly through sorting and recycling.

She noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to encourage a circular economy to reduce environmental and health risks associated with improper waste disposal.

“We informed them that properly sorted waste materials can be sold to recyclers, creating additional income while promoting environmental sustainability,” she stressed.

As part of the outreach, two large waste bins were donated to the market to support. According to her, the bins are expected to serve as designated collection points for recyclable materials, leading to cleaner market spaces, improved public health, and increased awareness of sustainable waste management practices among traders.
