Relationship-based on traditions: Another way to know a wrong relationship is to examine what the relationship is based upon, whether it is based on God’s word or mere traditions of man. Any relationship based on traditions cannot stand the taste of time.

For instance, where a man was compelled to marry the senior sister of his intended spouse because they believe that the senior sister must marry first. That was actually the case of Jacob and his experience in Laban’s house in the Bible. He actually laboured for Rachel for seven years and the Bible made us know that it was Leah (Rachel’s elder sister) that they gave to Jacob. But Jacob was not discouraged, as he was willing to work for another seven years, because of his love for Rachel. Gen. 29:15-20. Says: “And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou [art] my brother, shouldest thou, therefore, serve me for nought? Tell me, what [shall] thy wages [be]? And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder [was] Leah, and the name of the younger [was] Rachel. Leah [was] tender eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. And Laban said, [It is] better that I give her to thee than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him [but] a few days, for the love he had to her (KJV).”

Unfortunately, the tradition did not allow Jacob to get the woman he loved and laboured for. They believed that the senior sister must be married first and they forced her on Jacob without taking cognizant of the fact that Jacob did not love her. Tradition makes people act contrary to the word of God. Mat. 15:3 says, “But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? (KJV)”. Tradition is an enemy of God’s will. Tradition forestalls stagnation and limitation. In verse 6 of Matthew 15, Jesus talked about people who “make the commandment of God of no effect by their tradition.” Tradition robs people of their ability to think and use their initiatives.

For instance, we were told of seven brothers who died over a woman in Mat. 22:24-29. They had a tradition that the younger brother must inherit the wife of his deceased elder brother. So about six brothers had died consecutively and the seventh still went ahead to inherit the woman. The seventh brother eventually died, as well. The only tradition could make seven brothers experience that kind of calamity or woes. Tradition is demonic, tradition enslaves and destroys. Tradition is an enemy of progress; it forestalls stagnation. Particularly, when the tradition is against the word of God.

There are many children of God who study God’s word but they still allow their traditions to govern their lives. In many tradition women are relegated to the backside, they see them like inferior and treat them like slaves without any sense of equality. Some only see women as sex toys and baby factories, but such tradition is barbaric, outdated as it opposes the word of God. Any tradition that is contrary to the word of God must be set aside.

As children of God, we must learn to follow the word of God, not our traditions. “Beware, lest any man spoil you with philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ,” (Colo. 2:8)
