Text: Judges 13; 14 & 15

Key Verse: Judges 13:25, “And the Spirit of the Lord began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.” (KJV)

Samson was born with a specific mission and purpose and that was to save the people of Israel from the hands of the Philistines. He was born during the 40-year period of Philistine oppression against the children of Israel. An angel of the Lord appeared to the barren wife of an Israelite named Manoah, with the announcement that she would miraculously bear a son and that he will be a Nazirite, “dedicated” to the Lord at the time of his birth.

As Samson grew, the Spirit of the Lord began to move Samson into his own environment. As a pastor in the local church, is the Spirit of God working through you in your environment? Are you being used by the Spirit of God in that office, family, community and environment that you found yourself in? God wants to use us to do mighty works in our environment and even beyond.

As Samson went down to Timnath, behold, a young lion roared against him. The Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one might tear apart a kid (Judges 14:6). That was the secret of whatever he wanted to do, the Spirit of God was mightily upon him. There is a chorus that says, “It’s not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit saith the Lord. This mountain shall be removed. It’s by My Spirit saith the Lord.”

We need the Holy Spirit in our daily Christian walk today. We need the Holy Spirit coming upon us mightily so that we can fight the battles of the Lord like Samson.

Sampson put confusion in the camp of his enemies, the Philistines, destroyed their economy and made them run helter-skelter because his father-in-law took his wife and gave her to his companion. He burned up the shocks and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves. (Judges 15:4-5). My prayer is that God will raise men who will be instruments in the hands of God to scatter the plans of the enemy.

A lot of things are disturbing the peace of our nation, but we need men of the spirit that God is going to use to do great things. There are many people in sin and bondage and the enemy has tied so many people down. In these days where Evangelism is no longer too good, we still need people who understand Acts 1:8, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and souls will be saved. The Philistines in retaliation came up and burnt Samson’s wife and her father with fire. Samson revenged, killed a great number of the Philistines, and went to hide behind a rock of Etam.

In response, the Philistines went and pitched a tent in Judah in search of Samson. The men of Philistines came to the people of Judah and demanded that they give only Samson to them and the rest of them can go (Judges 15:10). When I think about it, give us only one man and the rest of you can go. The rest of the people did not matter and were of no consequence to the Philistines. All they wanted was one man, his name was Samson and every other man is of no consequence. Anybody who is praying that God will use him should get ready for the battle, but surely no weapon fashioned against you by the agents of darkness coming after you that shall prosper.
