Since a recent pronouncement by a popular writer and columnist, who once mingled with those in the corridors of power, to the effect that demonic forces are holding Nigerian leaders firmly in their grasp and are the ones directing affairs in Aso Rock Villa, the media has been abuzz with all manner of conjectures as to what such could portend for the country and its people. Not to be outdone in such matters, many Nigerians, clergy and laymen alike, have also been proffering different solutions to the ‘problem.’ But is there any iota of truth in such a claim? Why would demons invade the highest places in the land, afflicting people in government with diseases and misfortune? What are the implications of having such undesirable guests in those high places? And what can be done to tackle the demons and free Nigerian leaders from their shackles, so they are able to rule effectively? CHRIS IREKAMBA and ISAAC TAIWO report.
‘Our People Think That By
Acquiring Political Power, They
Can Equate Themselves With God’
(Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor, Rivers State Islamic Leader/Vice President General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Rivers State)
THIS issue of demons or devils or whatever they are called is quite a tough one. These are anti-godly elements that are against God’s will. They are ever piloting against His will and they find in human beings weaknesses they can exploit to stall God’s purpose for man on earth. But God, in His infinity mercy, has already provided man with the tools to fight and even eliminate these demons. Our present predicament in the country is as a result of our almost complete deviation from the laws of Allah. He created the universe, the earth and endowed it with everything before He created man and said, ‘take charge of everything I have here.’ The direction in the Qur’an is ‘eat and drink, but don’t be extravagant.’ In other words, don’t be wasteful of the resources I have given to you. I have created you as my ambassador on earth. Therefore, whereas I give you freedom to eat anything, but you should utilise the resources and remember that you are accountable to Me, the Owner of the earth. This is the area we have forgotten.
So, our people now think that by acquiring physical or political power, they are almost like God, there to preside over the people’s affairs. In the process, they forget that they are placed there on trust, that their time is limited and that their primary purpose of being there is to mobilise the resources of the country for better service to the people. How can you say you are a leader or whatever in the position of things and people are hungry? People are suffering and you are there embezzling the common resources? What do they do with the billions of naira or billions of dollars, when people are suffering? They actually give the impression that demons are truly controlling those in the helm of affairs, which may not be far from the truth. By their activities, even they themselves are demonic.
So, you don’t need any prophet or soothsayers or whatever to imply that. But Allah has given us a window of opportunities. He gave us position of trust, as well as, certain responsibilities. He also gave us love to defeat our enemies. The only thing you are required to do is just to hold firmly to those laws that Allah has given us and implement those welfare activities for the service of the common people. Positive service to the people is what is required of somebody in a position of trust, because there is no way to defend what is happening or what has happened in this country in the last 10 or 15 years. We have a lot of resources, so much so that people are wasting them.
But now, look at the situation we have found ourselves. Thank God for the current revelations of what is happening right now. If people or those in power deviate from the laws of Allah, the demons or Satan can invade or begin to control them. There is nowhere demons cannot penetrate and the implication is that you’ve been doing things your own way instead of following Allah’s injunctions. The remedy is for them to trace their ways back to Allah’s laws, walk and act in the ways of Allah, Who has placed them there. They should do what is right and roll out polices that can positively affect the common people and make them happy. There is no way demons or Satan would affect or attack you, when you are on the right path.
‘Demonic Powers Can Be Deeply Enthroned When Leaders Are Preoccupied With Personal Comfort’
(Most Rev. (Dr.) Michael Olusina Fape, Archbishop, Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos/Diocesan Bishop of Remo, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Sagamu, Ogun State)
FUNDAMENTALLY and scripturally, whether or not people believe it, government is ordained by God for the good of mankind (Romans 13:1-4). It must also be said that life is an ongoing battle between the forces of light and darkness; between God and Satan. It naturally follows, therefore, that whenever there is a good government, which seeks the people’s welfare, demonic forces will try to truncate such good plans.
The fact that the scriptures refer to demonic forces as principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12) shows that their primary purpose or intent is to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10a). Principalities and powers in the original Greek words have the connotation of wicked rulers. Their rule is to counter God’s rule, reign or government, which seeks the general welfare or wellbeing of the people.
Thus, from time immemorial, demonic powers have always existed at the seat of power or government, acting out their wicked reigns through the instrumentality of human agents. The primary purpose is to bring hardship upon mankind. We have a few examples in the Biblical Pharaoh, Ahab and Jezebel. Adolf Hitler and the military dictators of our country in the last century also serve as good examples of demonic powers at the seat of government. Of course, what was true of yester years is also true of the 21st century.
Today, the irony of the matter is that people may be looking for demons clothed in black apparels with two horns in their head to validate the presence of demonic forces in our time. But of a truth, demonic powers are deeply enthroned at the seat of government, when those in government look away from the plight of the people they govern and are preoccupied with personal comfort. When the cries of poor people for justice, provision of basic social amenities for minimum comfort are ignored, and those in government act and behave as if nobody can challenge their oppressive rule, then it is the sign that demonic powers are in authority.
As long as the earth endures, demonic powers will always seek to influence those in government through human agents posing as advisers, who may be past leaders in the country. They could also be respected religious leaders. The only way to avoid falling prey to demonic influences of such ungodly advisers is to embrace righteousness. This is simply because, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). The moment our leaders are clothed in the garment of righteousness, and wholeheartedly seek the counsel of God, they will neither be deceived nor blindfolded by the deceit of the devil acting out his demonic powers through human agents posing as advisers.
‘Demons Gain Influence Over Leader Through
Advisers And Counsellors’
(Dr. Cosmas Ilechukwu, General Overseer,
Charismatic Renewal Ministries)
DEMONS are evil spirits, who fell with Lucifer at his revolt against God in dateless past. The details of Lucifer’s revolt, his subsequent defeat and expulsion from heaven are well documented in the Bible (Isaiah 14:12-14). The crux of his revolt was hinged on his inordinate lust for power – he wanted to be like the Most High. Satan has always been fascinated with power of any kind and no other creature understands power more than him. He operates by leveraging power and influence to execute his nefarious schemes. Hence, he targets leaders and works surreptitiously to gain their allegiance and by so doing, control their policies and agenda.
He was the brain behind the fatal mistakes of leaders right from ancient times till today. Whenever a person in authority gives him any opportunity through meddling with the occult and other fetish practices, he steps in and takes over. King Saul, the first king of Israel disobeyed God and fell under the spell of Satan (1 Samuel 16:14). King David, through pride, opened the door for Satan to attack him and the nation of Israel suffered dearly for that. The Bible records, “Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel” (1 Chronicles 21:1). He ordered for census without following the established guideline God had given to them. Whenever a leader acts in disobedience to God, he invites the activities of demons in his leadership.
Demons are Satan’s foot soldiers. They are active today, as they were in the ancient world, except that they have become more sophisticated in their modus operandi. Satan has a well-organised political system designed to influence political leaders all over the world. He has powerful demons, who oversee different nations of the world (Daniel 10:12-13, 20). Demons also gain influence over leaders through advisers and counsellors who meddle with them (1 Kings 22:20-23).
The way to overcome the influence of demons in any seat of power is through intentional promotion of righteousness. “Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Therefore, it is important we elect godly people into offices –“Remove the wicked from leadership and authority will be credible and God-honouring” (Proverbs 25:5). Nature does not allow a vacuum. Wherever God is not enthroned, Satan will fill the gap and wickedness will prevail.
‘We Need To Revisit The Foundations Of Nigeria, Pray To God For
An Enduring Divine Intervention’
(Bishop (Dr.) Moses Adedipe, General Superintendent, The Universal Christian Mission Int’l, Lagos.)
IT is quite disturbing to note that it has taken this long for us to realise this. We live in a world with values that have greatly changed, where it doesn’t really matter how you get what you are looking for, where men would go to any extent to ensure they become people of influence in the society. Wake up everybody! There are forces beyond the human sphere that we are contending with. Some may refer to this as tales, but they are matters that the postmodern mind may not be able to comprehend.
The scripture is clear on this matter in the book of Ephesians 6:12 (KJV) – “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
High places here do not just translate to the firmaments, but also in places of authority. It does not matter what century we are, 21st or another, spiritual realm operates outside of the boundaries of time and space. Every man is a spirit that has a soul and occupies a temporal body. The possibility that demons could invade and interfere in the affairs of men, especially in the seat of power, is affirmative. Demons are manipulating spirits, they have personalities, they crave power and worship and they are extremely legalistic. Once you sign up, they would always show up to make claims and this often translates into leaders taking unreasonable and inexplicable actions that negatively affect the whole population.
The focus here is not what can be done to avoid them in high places because they are there already, rather, it should be how to rid them from our personal lives and from our seat of governance.
The scripture is also clear about way out in the book of 2 Chronicles 7:14-15 (NIV) – “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
This scripture relates to People of God by redemption, but can also relate to people of God by creation. All our leaders in governance MUST turn from their wicked ways and seek the face of God, not in a ceremonial or religious manner, but in a genuine spiritual search. God has made a way of escape through the redemption work of Jesus Christ. My submission on this matter is thus: we need to revisit the foundations of Nigeria as an entity and pray to God for express and enduring divine intervention. Nigeria MUST be saved.‘The Citizens Will Be The Worse For It’
(Pastor Ezekiel Joel, General Overseer,
Full Salvation Believers’ Assembly Int’l,
Nnewi, Anambra State)
METHINKS it smacks of the height of spiritual naivety to deny the activities and undercover operations of Satan, by anyone no matter how educated or sophisticated. The Devil has a unique interest in every human leadership, whether secular or spiritual. This much is shown in the Scripture. Christ, Himself tells of how Satan, knowing the strategic leadership roles, which Apostle Peter was to play in the church, after Christ’s departure, desired to have him “that he may sift” him as wheat (Luke.22: 31, 32; John. 21:15-17; Acts.1: 12-22; 2:1-41; 10:9-48). This fact is buttressed by Apostle Paul’s experience and epistle (Acts.13: 1-12; Eph.6: 11, 12).
Satan has an organised hierarchy of demons, which carry out his manipulations, especially of leaders, both in the political and secular aspects of the nations. There are territorial spirits, and dominant controlling demons in charge of various strata of government and ruling houses. These evil powers are interested in the economic, social, financial, and state policy directions or decisions of every government. There was the Prince of Persia, in Prophet Daniel’s era (Dan.10: 10-21). These demonic spirits are capable of invading, manipulating, influencing leaders, and causing a lot of unimaginable calamities and setbacks of inexplicable dimensions and of gargantuan proportions, including diseases that defy medical diagnosis and treatment. It is for this reasons every believer is commanded in Scripture: “…first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, …be made…for kings, and all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” (11Timothy. 2: 11Timo. 2: 1, 2). Let no one employ public relations gimmicks to deceive anyone, trying to deny the obvious.
It is necessary to have altruistic, godly men of God, who understand strategic spiritual warfare prayers, and Spirit-directed spiritual mapping strategies to pray at the outset of any government administration, and periodically, in order to ensure spiritual sanitation of the seat of power. Otherwise, by the time the present occupants leave, they may have unsavoury tales to tell. And, meanwhile, it is the citizens that will be the worse for it. I believe we have an abundance of genuine men of God in this blessed and great country, who understand my position, and who will readily pray for the seat of power, not for pecuniary advantages, but for pure altruistic reasons. The earlier we seek and engage them, the better it shall be for Nigeria.
‘They Should Remember That It Is Unacceptable To
Serve God With Mammon’
(His Eminence, Dr. Samuel ’Emeka Kanu Uche, Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria (MCN)
WHAT is happening is scriptural, which goes to say that the devil, as a roaring lion, continues to go about, seeking whom to devour. The devil has been perpetrating his evil act before our Lord Jesus Christ was born, when we remember Job’s case. He is known for causing problems and putting sorrow into peoples’ lives.
This is the reason the Bible tells us that the weapons of warfare are not carnal, but mighty through our God … The antidote is to be deeply connected to God and pray fervently, but you have to be connected to that God through genuine salvation in Christ Jesus. As Christians, we do not believe in any other power such as juju and the like. Our power is in the Blood of Jesus. It is the same power that consumed the sacrifice of Elijah. About 400 prophets of Baal could not confront the God of Elijah and at the end, they lost their lives. We should know that the power of God is synonymous with righteousness and light.
The way out is that people in government and the entire Nigerians should turn to the only Living God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and serve Him wholeheartedly. They should remember that it is unacceptable to serve God with mammon. If they should serve God with righteousness, definitely, the devil will not have a way in their lives. He knows what people in government are doing and that is why he is attacking them. If anyone is not covered with the blood of Jesus, the only Blood of Righteousness that can absolve anyone from blame and condemnation and sin, he is prone to attack of the demons.
We can see what members of Boko Haram group are doing; killing and destroying, which are nothing but the same works of demons. Nigerians can only eliminate the invasion of demons everywhere by praying in righteousness, holiness, with uprightness, probity and then will our prayers be acceptable. People in government and every Nigerian should accept that we have all sinned and repent.
As long as conspiracy, mischief, tribalism, corruption and negative lifestyle continue to pervade the system, the demons would continue to operate, because these are the vices that open the door for them to operate and as long as these are prevailing, no one can stop their nefarious acts.
