Religion without character is fake, says Onuoha

A Methodist Bishop and President, Nigeria inter-faith action association, Sunday Onuoha, has said lack of character is responsible for the increasing rate of crime in the state, even with the innumerable worship centres. He said until people recognise that character is more important than wealth, there can be not much progress.

Bishop Onuoha said this at the Muslim and Christian prayer meeting organised by the commonwealth business women prayer summit with the theme: ‘Peace, unity and stronger economy for Nigeria.’

“When we celebrate people with questionable character, it sends the wrong message to our young ones and so we compound our problems,” he said.

On issues arising from the activities of Fulani herdsmen, Bishop Onuoha said government should identify criminals and exercise full authority as stipulated by the law. “We have law enforcement agencies. Some Fulani are already crying out that they are being given a bad name. Many of them are responsible and are not happy about what is happening across the country. We should isolate criminals and put the nation back in shape,” he said.

Representing the Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shedu Chindo Yamusa, Samsudeen Maikasua while stressing the importance of unity in a nation, said Nigerians need one another to survive. “It is important to live for others. It is the rule of nature as no man is an island,” he said.

According to the chairperson, CBW Nigeria, Mrs. Afoma Clara Adigwe, it was a platform that brought the 53 commonwealth nations together to network and aid women’s economic empowerment.

“The prayer meeting was to further foster peace and unity among us, because that is the only way we can have an enabling environment to grow and do business,” she said.
