Ikeja GRA of derelict roads

Ladoke Akintola

It is a Government Reserved Area (GRA) and expected to enjoy some form of status symbol, but the state of some of its infrastructure such as roads, make the place look like a rejected neighbourhood. Of note, and in line with its special status, it has dedicated buses plying its road.

Also, new buildings that reflect the GRA status are springing up daily, however, the way they are erected go against required standard in terms of space.

And truly, like the gigantic structures available in the GRA, high networth Nigerians live there and many also look forward to living there. While the state government is trying to give the place a facelift, the public infrastructure available in the Ikeja GRA show that there is more work to do is reflected in the number of bad roads still dotting the neighbourhood.

From Ladoke Akintola to Remi Fanikayode, Sasegbon or Sobo Arobiodu, the poor state of the roads stare you in the face, and the awful state of these roads becomes more obvious when it rains.

So, from sections of Adekunle Fajuyi Road to Showemimo Street, Chief Oluyomi Finnih Link Road, Oduduwa Crescent, Oladipo Bateye, Oduduwa Way to Ife Ariyo, Esugbayi and Sasegbon streets, the roads are unbefitting GRA.

A commercial bus driver, who simply gave his name as Emeka, complained about the poor state of some of the roads within the Ikeja GRA, saying this has made him to visit his mechanic too often, especially during raining season.  According to him, there are some roads in GRA that motorists often avoid owing to the bad roads.

“This Adekunle Fajuyi Road is the worst in this GRA, if any small rain falls; it becomes a big problem driving through.
“I have stopped taking passengers heading to some of these roads and if I decide to take such routes, then the passengers would pay extra. I wonder what the government is looking at in allowing the roads to get dilapidated to the present state they are.”

Emeka called on government to repair the roads, noting that the best time for the government to attend to the road is now, especially as the rainy season is over.  He implored Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to send some representatives to inspect the roads to have a feel of how bad the roads are.

A resident of Remi Fani-Kayode Road, Olamojiba Daniel, narrated how bad the road was before some persons came to pour sand and stones on the multiple potholes on the road.

“If you came here in the last three to four weeks, you will not want to pass through this road again because of their state.
“The problem of many of the roads in GRA is that there are no gutters or drainage facility.”

He, therefore, urged government to channel a deep gutter for water to flow of the streets within GRA. A member of Redeemed Christian Church Of God, Rose of Sharon Parish at Adekunle Fajuyi Road, Mr Williams also narrated how terrible the road has been for a long time and how this affects the church, especially, when rain falls on Sunday morning.

Another motorist, Bayo Dipo, said the current situation of the road from the PWD Bus Stop end is so disheartening.“In the past four to five years, we have been pleading with the state government to look at this place, but they never did.”
