Romans 1:16 is Paul’s testimony about his mission, which is to preach the good news about Christ. Paul mentioned the word “Gospel,” which means God’s news or Good News. In Greek it is ‘evangelion’, God’s announcement to us”. The message of the gospel is the gospel of Christ.

To preach the gospel was Jesus’ mission on earth. Jesus Christ Himself preached the gospel. Mathew 4:23, “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of diseases among the people.” Jesus came to announce good news. Gospel simply tells us that we’ve won the victory that God Has won for us. The message of the gospel is the gospel of Christ.

The “Gospel” was also the message of the apostles of Jesus, whom Jesus entrusted His ministry after He left. Acts 8:25, “And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.”

The Gospel is the Church’s message. The Church has been charged to preach the gospel. Mathew 24:14, “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

The gospel is not bad news but good news. It brings to a sinner, the message of hope and not condemnation. The gospel is God’s convincing and convicting power unto salvation. The gospel is about all that Jesus did for mankind’s redemption.

Sometimes, you hear some threats in the form of preaching and you wonder if it is the gospel. The gospel is an announcement of good news and something good and not threats. Jesus preached it, the Apostles preached it and we must preach it.

What is the Gospel and what does this good news contain?
The Gospel is the power of God. It is the announcement of God’s power. It is God’s active power at work. What kind of power is that? It is the power of God’s love for man, the Bible says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believe in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.”

The Gospel is not that God wants to kill you, but that He wants you to have eternal life. The Gospel is not about God’s enmity against you, but about His love for you. It is not His will that you spend eternity in hell. It is not a message of judgment, hatred and fear. The gospel is the message of God’s love.

The Gospel is the power of God over sin. The Gospel tells us that the power of sin has been broken. The gospel says sin has no power over you and it sets you free from the power of sin.

The Gospel is the power of God over Satan. It announces that Satan has been defeated and under our feet. It announces the victory of Jesus. The Gospel is an announcement that there is victory for us, which Jesus won. Any Gospel that keeps you in fear of Satan is not the gospel. Whenever we preach the gospel, it is the power of God being announced. We are declaring the power of God.

I encourage you, beloved; to accept this good news about Christ and it shall be well with your soul.

Today’s Nugget: The message of the gospel is the gospel of Christ.

Prayer: I confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour
