Transfer of Godly heritage to next generation
Text: 2 Timothy 1:1-5
Key Verse: 2 Timothy 1:5, “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” (KJV)
Every believer in Christ has a responsibility to effectually pass God’s truth on to the next generation. We should duplicate the God kind of life into the lives of people around us. It is very important as parents to learn how to leave your children a heritage of faith, not just material inheritance. You should leave for the next generation’s imperishable and eternal legacy and not only tangible items.
Apostle Paul writing to his beloved son, Timothy took special note of the sincere faith which he saw in him, which also he saw first in Timothy’s grandmother Lois, and in Timothy’s mother Eunice. This was three generations of people who worshipped God in spirit and truth beginning from Lois to Eunice and unto Timothy. What do people see when they look into your life? Is your child seeing Jesus in you? Don’t allow your child to say that he is not seeing Jesus in you. The most important thing is that as your child is growing up, he will see Jesus all around you.
The apostle Paul instructed Timothy to invest his life in faithful men who would be able to pass God’s truth on to the next generation. 2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” The church should as a matter of responsibility commits itself to the priority of training men for Christ who will in turn pass on the Godly heritage to the next generation.
The legal rule “nemo dat quod non habet” means that you cannot give what you don’t have. The nemo dat rule states that the transferor of goods cannot pass a better title than he himself possesses. Are you of God? If you are not of God, you cannot pass on Jesus to the next generation. You may be in church and not of God. If someone is of God, there will be evidence around him that he is of God. These evidences are not hidden; they are plain for everyone to see. You cannot be a child of God and at the same time a hypocrite. Hypocrites go with different faces to different places.
If you are a child of God, the evidence are always clear. Jesus said, by their fruits, you shall know them (Matthew 7:16). It is by what comes out of your life that people will know that you are a child of God. Jesus came with total salvation, it is full and free. We should live the life of Christ and the life of Christ is holiness, uprightness, purity, and truth. When Jesus is the Lord of your life, it is He who now decides and determines everything about your life. Allow Jesus to be the Lord of your life. If Jesus is not the Lord of your life, you have missed the way.
We the children of God are the Timothy of today and we must pass the baton of faith, righteousness, holy living, and truth to the next generation. We must invest in the next generation – not merely to know the word of God but to live it out in their lifestyles and to be able to pass it on to others. It is a fundamental of Christian faith to train men who will uphold and pass on God’s Word and sound doctrine.
