In the rapidly evolving fields of data privacy and technology law, Christianah Olawumi Akinyemi is making her mark as a rising star. With a legal career spanning Nigeria and the United States, Christianah has established herself as a thought leader, blending her expertise with a passion for innovation and digital rights advocacy. Her commitment to advancing data privacy awareness and tackling modern legal challenges has earned her recognition as a trailblazer in the field.

Christianah’s academic journey began at Obafemi Awolowo University where she earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree with Second Class Honors (Upper Division). Her time at the university was defined by intellectual curiosity and a dedication to justice and governance. This foundation propelled her to the Nigerian Law School, where she was called to the Bar, specializing in corporate law and professional ethics.

Her professional career commenced at Tokunbo Olugbenga and Co, a leading law firm in Lagos, Nigeria. Here, she cultivated a strong interest in intellectual property law, excelling in trademark registrations, intellectual property risk assessments, dispute resolution, and data privacy. “Intellectual property law became more than a practice it became a tool to empower creators and innovators,” she recalls. This realization shaped her career path.

Christianah’s expertise extended to data protection, where she played a pivotal role in safeguarding corporate data environments. During her tenure at Kings Guards Nigeria Limited, she implemented robust governance frameworks that integrated data protection principles into operational processes.

Currently pursuing a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Intellectual Property and Technology at American University Washington College of Law, Christianah combines academic rigor with practical experience. Her coursework in Cyber Law, Trademark Practice, and Information Privacy complements her hands-on work, preparing her to tackle global legal challenges. As a Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property Scholar, she has been recognized for her academic excellence and dedication to advancing intellectual property rights.

Christianah’s career in the United States has been equally impactful. As an intern at the Technology Innovation Law Firm (T-I-L), she has advised clients on brand protection strategies, managed complex trademark cases, and contributed to the launch of Tilly, an AI-powered legal tool designed to assist lawyers with Intellectual Property questions. “Innovation drives our work at T-I-L, and Tilly represents a new era of efficiency and accuracy in legal practice,” she explains.

Her passion for data privacy extends beyond her professional engagements. Recently, Christianah lent her voice to the ongoing discussions surrounding the TikTok ban in America, addressing significant privacy concerns. Her article, TikTok Under Scrutiny: Balancing National Security and User Privacy in the Digital Age, explored the intersection of national security and data protection, offering insights into the broader implications for user rights and corporate accountability.

Beyond her professional and academic endeavors, Christianah is an active member of prestigious organizations such as the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACIArb, UK). These affiliations highlight her broader commitment to promoting good governance and legal excellence.

Christianah’s advocacy efforts further underscore her passion for the law. As a former member of the Caretaker Committee of the Young Lawyers’ Forum of Nigeria, she mentored young practitioners, encouraging them to explore opportunities in Intellectual Property law. “Empowering the next generation of lawyers is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work,” she shares.

At T-I-L, Christianah has spearheaded initiatives to educate clients and stakeholders on the intersection of Intellectual property and technology. She led the development of training programs on artificial intelligence and data privacy, emphasizing the importance of ethical and responsible technology use.

Her vision is both inspiring and forward-thinking: to harness the transformative power of Intellectual Property law to drive innovation and economic growth. “In a world fueled by technology and creativity, Intellectual Property is the cornerstone of progress. Protecting it ensures that creators and innovators can thrive,” she asserts.

Christianah’s contributions have earned her accolades and respect. As Vice President of Operations for the LL.M Board at American University, she has influenced key discussions on Intellectual Property and technology law, shaping her peers and the broader academic community.

Through conferences, training sessions, and outreach programs, Christianah remains committed to fostering awareness and promoting best practices in data privacy and technology law.
