NISLT moves to enforce compliance with curricula, regulations

The Nigerian Institute of Science and Technology (NISLT) has commenced a clampdown on tertiary institutions that take delight in breaching the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) curricula.

Director General/Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the institute, Mr. Adeniyi Gbadegesin, while commissioning the Federal Government’s enforcement team at the institute’s headquarters, said there was need to improve the standard of teaching of SLT to ensure uniformity in the curriculum designed for the tertiary institutions by the Federal Government.

He said: “In 2003, the Federal Government gave us enabling law to regulate the practice of Science Laboratory Technology in the country. The mandate was to advance science technology profession in Nigeria. We want to ensure rapid development of the nation through Science Laboratory Technology.

“We have developed a curricula that guides SLT students in the tertiary institutions, but we have discovered that these standards are now being distorted by many institutions. We have also discovered that many schools are now teaching only the theoretical aspect of the course, rather than combining practical with theory. The way we designed the programme, it is expected to be 75 per cent of practical and 25 per cent of theory. We also discovered that people that are teaching SLT in tertiary institutions are not core SLT graduates,” Gbadesin stated.

He continued: “That is why we are now saying enough of the unprofessionalism in our tertiary institutions so as to have quality graduates. We want to ensure high standards and competent practice among our members… We have developed standards for all tertiary institutions across the country, but which some of them are not abiding with. We are going round the schools across the country to see the level of compliance to the developed standards for all the tertiary institutions,” he added.
