Firms partner to strengthen AI-enabled cybersecurity

Artificial-intelligence

As digital transformation accelerates across West Africa, Quomodo Systems Africa and Check Point Software Technologies have partnered to strengthen cybersecurity protection for Nigerian businesses, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

The partnership combines Check Point’s threat intelligence and automated prevention technologies with Quomodo’s regional infrastructure and market expertise.

The companies disclosed the partnership at a customer engagement in Lagos, where executives and technology experts discussed the growing cyber threat landscape and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to enterprise security.

The event, themed “Secure Today, Resilient Tomorrow,” focused on emerging cybersecurity threats and solutions to help organisations detect, prevent and respond to attacks.

Speaking at the event, Chief Financial Officer of Quomodo Systems Africa, Olufunke Tonye-Preghafi, said the oil and gas sector was prioritised because of its strategic importance to the Nigerian economy.

She said cyberattacks against the sector were increasing and warned that smaller companies could increasingly become entry points for attacks against larger organisations.

“We are beginning to see an increase in attacks on oil and gas,” she said.

According to her, attackers could target smaller companies as a pathway to larger organisations.
“So, once you’re able to hit small oil companies, they begin to get more intelligent. Then, they will now target bigger companies,” she said.

Tonye-Preghafi said the customer engagement was designed to give businesses direct access to the developers of Check Point’s security solutions and enable them to better understand how the technologies could address their specific needs.

She also stressed the importance of securing the perimeter of businesses as cyber threats become more sophisticated.

She said AI could enable attackers to generate large numbers of prompts and attack vectors, making it necessary for businesses to strengthen their security capabilities.

“For a country like Nigeria that depends a lot on oil and gas, not much has been done for the protection of the industry,” she said.

She added that Quomodo assesses the technology environment of each customer before recommending appropriate cybersecurity solutions.

In his remarks, Check Point’s Country Manager, Kingsley Oseghale, described the engagement as strategic to deepening the company’s partnership with Quomodo.

He said nine of the 10 largest banks across Nigeria and Ghana were CheckPoint customers, adding that the company also supports organisations in Nigeria’s energy sector.

According to him, Check Point provides security solutions to companies including Total Nigeria, Oando and Sahara Energy.

He said the engagement was aimed at helping customers identify vulnerabilities and understand how Check Point’s solutions could strengthen their security environments.

The Channel Manager for West Africa at Check Point, Dr Happiness Udo, described Quomodo as one of the company’s strategic partners in the region.
