To pave way for proper investigation and evaluation of likely causes of death of fun seekers at the Elegushi Beach, the Elegushi family has temporarily closed down the facility in support of ongoing inquiry by the Lagos State government.

The Asiwaju of Ikateland, Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi, who revealed this at a press briefing yesterday, said the move was the resolution passed by a committee set up after the death of the two University of Lagos (UNILAG) students, who allegedly drowned three weeks ago at the beach.

He ruled out the insinuation in some quarters that government forced them to take the move, noting that a meeting has been fixed between the family and the ministry of waterfront for next Tuesday.

Elegushi, however, said contrary to reports that the two victims died at the beach, they actually died in the hospital. He said that the victims’ friends failed to allow the beach management to take care of the victims, before they were forcefully taken to the hospitals where they gave up the ghost.

“This is the not the first time this kind of thing will happen in beaches. Our response is not bad and it can’t be perfect anywhere, but it is unfortunate that the two people died. What really happened was due to the high tide and undercurrent waves and our Life Guards have always come to peoples’ rescue. We are doing everything to ensure that everything is done according to the best global practices.

“We have safety apparatus and security, especially the red and white flags to indicate when it is safe and when not safe to swim but the issue is that our people always disobey rules. Forcing them would amount to allegation of assault. There is need for us to improve on what we have on ground, we are planning to initiate insurance cover for any fun seekers who buys ticket at the beach and to also install billboards and life gadgets,” he said.
