Faced with the growing threat of deforestation through human activities, the United Nations (UN) has commenced the training of some communities in Cross River State on forest regeneration.

Following the training, in 10 years to come the people of Okuromotet would be free from Forest degradation by raising 10,000 Cocoa nurseries.

This was stated at the weekend during a two-day programme on how to regenerate their forest through raising of 10,000 nurseries of cash crops, organized by a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) called Wanel-aedon Development Association.

The training programme which was funded by the United Nations Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD), Small Grants Program, (SGP), Global Environment Facility, (GEF) through United Nations Development Programme , (UNDP), trained 70 people on raising of nurseries of catch crops.

Secretary to the association, Mrs. Joy Ogar disclosed that the nurseries would after seven months be distributed to farmers that would be planted and in return generate income to individuals in the community.

Mrs. Ogar, said apart from empowering the community in economic change, their forest would regenerate from what it has lost.

She said, “We are having a two days’ workshop of training of trainers of the community programme sponsored by SGP global fund. We are training about 20 persons that will train other 50 persons for the nursery work on nurseries of cash crops and tropical tree forest on degradation based on deforestation in the community.

“We are giving them equipment that will help them in carrying out the raising of ten thousand nurseries which will be later shared to the community to plant in the various farmlands to regenerate the forest. Based on the season we are starting now; it is going to take about seven months to raise the nurseries”.

Representative of the Clan Head of the Community, Ovarr Richard Adomi Ayang, Pastor Gregory Abeng Irom, said the gesture would create platform that would elevate ordinary farmers to greater farmers in the nearest future.

His words, “What is going on here has never happened to us before and it is beneficial to the entire community because we are taught to raised nurseries from the ten thousand bags provided by the NGO who is rendering this help to us.

“At the time these trees are planted, in the next ten years, we will harvest bountifully from it, so you can see that this community is blessed with lots from what has come to us.”
