K-Dollar’s musical dexterity and desire to bring int’l recognition to his music

The Nigerian music industry is the biggest in Africa, and one of the most recognised in the world due to the dynamism of the Afro-beat genre. This has brought about a rapid increase in the number of talents trying to make their mark by following in the footsteps of Nigeria’s biggest award-winning artists.

However, while for some the need to do music is just a burning desire for stardom, there are a few who are intentional about creating their distinct path on the music journey, by identifying their audience and making music that impacts certain people and redefines their lifestyle; rhythmically and inspirationally.

K-dollar is a distinct artist. The man whose official name is Obalase Kehinde James is a talented vocalist, Afro-pop singer, and songwriter. He is versatile, a modern-day performer, creative and a spontaneous entertainer. He is making music in ways that align with his belief and purpose.

In a few of his interviews, he has stated his passion for championing music from his locality to the world without necessarily giving in to the buzz of Lagos being the key to a great music career.

“Music in Nigeria is big. I think the entertainment industry generates a lot of revenue for the country. However, I think we need to start filling spaces outside the supposed capital of entertainment – Lagos. Talent managers need to do more by reaching out to talents in other states and localities, managing them, and establishing them in their location.

“That way music is an art that is not specific to a few cities alone and we can experience an infusion of culture into varieties of genres and styles. My capacity as a musician is as elaborate as most of the popular stars, but I have found my audience in my origin, and my goal is to put Akure on the world map with my music.”

The above statement was paraphrased from his most recent Instagram live where he discussed his choice of music and musical journey. K-dollar makes music that resonates with people.

He broaches topics like love, fortune, diligence, and hustle with his lyrics. He has performed across several states in Nigeria but has made Akure, Ondo State his home. Without mincing words, he has been described as many as the next big act to come from the city since the last decade which saw the rise of the likes of Danny Young and Lord of Ajasa.

K-dollar has copped awards and recognitions in Ondo State for his contribution to music, especially among students of tertiary institutions where he got dubbed ‘King Performer’. He has collaborated with the likes of Script, Adizzy and thebeekillz on several singles.

He also performed at the Signo Music Rave Show in Akure, in December 2022, another one of Ondo State’s biggest music events.

He recently released his EP – One Love, One Heart, One Destiny, which is available for streaming on most digital platforms.

The EP gives deeper insight into his Afro-inspired music style, his lyrical prowess, his expansive creativity, and his attention to details as every track revealed. It establishes him as a musical prospect for the future.

Indeed, K-dollar is on the track to putting Akure City on the worldwide music map with his talent and musical skills.
