Time to remind god of his covenant

Our God is a covenant keeping Father. He does not renege on any agreement He enters into with any man who serves Him in holiness and righteousness. He has a track record of honouring any truce reached with any of His faithful children at any point in time. When King Solomon took over the mantle of leadership of the Israelites from his father, David, he made a burnt offering of 1,000 lambs to God and God directed him to make a request of what he wanted. His prayer for wisdom to lead the people of Israel was pleasant to God and He assured him of wisdom, wealth and honour. God was not economical in any of His promises.

Again, when King Hezekiah was sick unto death as we read in the lead scripture, through Prophet Isaiah, he was told to prepare for his death. He was instructed to put his house in order, but he cried to God, reminding Him of his exploits in the past, especially in the course of the Israelites.

Considering Hezekiah’s past good relationship, God added 15 years to his life. God did not fail Abraham; He promised him a new country and He fulfilled it by giving his descendants the land of Canaan — a land flowing with milk and honey. It was because of this land that God instructed Abraham to leave his people and his country, which he did.

Again, the promise of a son was made manifest when Isaac was born even in Abraham’s old age. Through Isaac, Abraham’s children both physical and spiritual are now uncountable. They are all over the world.

After saving Noah and his household from the flood that destroyed the entire earth, man and animals, God entered into a covenant with Noah and the entire mankind by promising never to destroy lives on earth with flood. Genesis 9:11-16 say: “And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there anymore be a flood to destroy the earth. 12: And God said, ‘this is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations. 13: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between the earth and I.’ 14: And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth that the bow shall be seen in the cloud. 15: And I will remember my covenant, which is between you and me, and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16: And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.”

God has kept all the covenants he made to man including the Edenic and Abrahamic covenants to date. He will keep any covenant you enter into with Him. He will also fulfill any promise He made to us for serving Him.

However, the terms of the covenant must be noted. Prior to His agreement with men, the rainbow never existed. It was rather created as a sign to assure us that God will never destroy the earth with flood again. The Noahic covenant reaffirmed the condition of the fallen man as announced by the Adamic covenant, which established human government to curb sin, since the threat of divine judgment with another flood has been removed.

With this new development, man has become responsible for the protection of human life through good governance (Gen. 9:5-6). No additional curse is placed upon the ground or is man to fear another universal flood, (Gen. 8:21; Gen. 9:11-16). The order of nature is confirmed (Gen. 8:22; 9:2).

In addition to this, man began to eat animal flesh, (Gen.9:3-4). It is presumed that prior to the flood, man was a vegetarian.
A prophetic declaration was made that the descendants of Canaan, one of Ham’s sons, will be servants to their brethren (Gen.9: 25-26). It was also declared prophetically that Shem would have a special relationship with the Lord (Gen. 9:27). All divine revelations were to come to pass through Sematic men, and our Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh descends from Shem.

Again, there was another prophetic declaration that Japheth’s descendants will expand his race (Gen.9:27). Government, science and the act of speaking broadly are part of the Japhetic covenant.

God has been a faithful keeper of all these truce including the Edenic covenant (Gen. 2:16), fulfilled by Adam. This covenant exposed man to the sin of disobedience and led to his fall from glory. From Adamic covenant (Gen.3:15), Abrahamic (Gen.12:2), to the Davidic covenant and all others to the New Testament covenants have been kept to date.

A covenant, therefore, God’s sovereign pronouncement through which He establishes a relationship with: (1) Himself and an individual as with Adam in Edenic covenant; (2) between Himself and mankind in general as in the Noahic covenant of never to destroy all flesh with flood again or to destroy the righteous with the wicked (Gen.18:23-32); (3) between Himself and a nation as witnessed in the Mosaic covenant (Exodus 19:3); (4) to strike a deal with a specific human family, a typical example is that entered into with the house of David in the promise of a kingly dynasty in perpetuity through the Davidic covenant (2Sam. 7:16).

It is possible for a covenant of one category to overlap the other. A typical example is the Davidic covenant where a continuing kingly house is promised with ultimate blessing, not only to David but also to the whole world in the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Covenants are normally unconditional in the sense that God obligates Himself in grace. However, man, the weaker party in this truce must be obedient to God in service while living a holy and righteous life to move the hand of God to fulfill His own part.

It is, therefore, an obligation on your own part to hold God tenaciously based on these covenants in relation to your needs. God does not go back on His words. The confirmation of this is in Psalm 89:33-34: “Nevertheless my loving kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. 34: My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.”

A covenant is God’s sovereign pronouncement to establish a relationship between Himself and another party, be it — an individual, a family or a nation. The Bible is awash with these divine pronouncements. It is your duty to search for any of them in the holy book, especially the ones that are applicable to your situation and hold God on them. In your prayers, remind God of your past exploits in His service; tell Him the faithful services you have rendered in the past. God does not go back on His words.

At the same time, you can enter into a covenant with God on your own by making a faithful commitment. God will equally honour it if you keep your own part.

However, for God to fulfill your covenant with Him, you the weaker party, must believe in Him, serve Him faithfully with all your heart and live a holy and a righteous life at all times. God on His own part honours any covenant you entered into with Him. If there is delay, keep on reminding Him and He will eventually honour His words to His own glory in Jesus’ name.
