A non-governmental organisation, Oando Foundation, has unveiled the climate action environmental education syllabus and lesson plan for schools in Lagos State.
The foundation, committed to promoting basic education, access and quality, also rewarded outstanding schools for their efforts at promoting activities that help sustain the environment.
Addressing teachers and pupils at the final of this year’s ‘Clean our
World’ (CoW) project in Lagos, the foundation, which is the corporate social responsibility arm of Oando Plc, enjoined teachers and pupils to embrace new methodology tools to promote climate actions.
The COW project, executed in conjunction with Sumitomo Chemicals, was aimed at educating children about environmental issues and equipping them with practical skills to become more responsible in the way they engage with the environment.
Speaking at the closing ceremony held at the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) hall, Lagos, the head of the foundation, Adekanla Adegoke, said the third phase was executed in 24 primary schools in the state.
“What we have done over a space of three years is that we learnt what works by running the pilot. We have learnt how to train the teachers, what they need to understand and the standard they need to adhere to.”
Adegoke said the project has impacted the lives of over 26,000 stakeholders; as about 70,000 kg of waste plastics were collected and recycled through different providers, while over 250 master trainers and stakeholders were trained to replicate the practices across the state.
The foundation chief explained that the syllabus and lesson plan were launched to revolutionise the teaching of environmental education across all primary schools in the state and equip the pupils with the right knowledge that would bring about a positive attitude towards the environment.
The SUBEB Secretary, Mr. Lamidi Akeem, commended the foundation and its partners for teaching school children how to turn waste to wealth, and for complementing government’s efforts on environmental education.
Three schools were honoured at the event for their exemplary efforts. Oluwalogbon Primary School in Kosofe Local Government came first; Dele Ajomale Primary School in Oshodi Isolo local government came second, while Ishaga Close Primary School in Mushin local government came third.
