Ten passengers lost their lives in an auto crash on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, yesterday.

The incident happened at the Kara Turning area, around 5:00 a.m., following collision by two vehicles.Seven other passengers sustained injuries.

Spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, Florence Okpe, said the two vehicles were are an ash-coloured Toyota Hiace bus with number plate, FKY898YF; and an orange-coloured Iveco truck.

Okpe said the probable cause of the crash was excessive speed. According to her, the bus lost control and rammed into the tipper, which was about to turn.

She said: “The injured victims were taken to Famobis Hospital for medical attention while the dead were deposited at Idera Morgue, Sagamu.”

Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, described the crash as avoidable, had precautionary steps been taken. He also urged drivers to take a 15-minute rest after every four hours, adding that fatigue is often a major cause of road crashes.

This came as the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) cautioned truck drivers against repairing broken down vehicles on the highway, to prevent accidents. It also urged them to desist from drunk driving and moving against the traffic.

This was with a view to curbing mishaps during the festive season.

South-West Zonal Commander, Ajibade Adekunle, gave the warning, yesterday, while reacting to the crash at Kara Turning.

Adekunle said the incident could have been avoided if a broken down vehicle had been towed off the road.

He added that Corps Commander, Semi Ogunyemi, has mandated personnel to embark on 24-hour patrol across the state to eliminate road accidents.
