President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been called upon to address the state of disrepair of federal government-owned roads across the country.

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Transparency and Accountability made the call, explaining that there is an urgent need to curtail the loss of lives and property as a result of the situation.

Convener of the group, Comrade Danesi Momoh, in a statement in Abuja on Monday, remarked that it is unfortunate that most federal roads have become death traps and a huge embarrassment for the country.

The group referred to the report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which indicated that Nigeria recorded 10,604 incidents of road crashes, with serious cases and fatalities amounting to over 60 per cent, to buttress its claim.

The group noted that while the Federal Ministry of Works, under Senator Dave Umahi, has been roundly applauded by Nigerians for the redesign, renegotiation, and readiness to deliver new quality roads to Nigerians, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), the group urged, should be adequately empowered to fix the bad road network in the country.
