The Ogun State Police Command has killed a highway robber during an encounter along the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode highway, while others escaped through a bush path with bullet wounds.

Spokesperson for the command, CSP Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement yesterday, noting that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Odogbolu received a report that armed robbers had blocked the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode highway opposite Western University, near the multiple bridge.

Odutola said the DPO immediately mobilised his patrol team, collaborating with teams from Obalende and the Amotekun corps, to respond to the distress call.

According to her, one of the robbers was fatally injured during the encounter, while others fled into the bush with gunshot wounds. A ghost gun was recovered at the scene, and the corpse of the deceased robber was deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital morgue.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, Odutola stated, adding that updates would be provided as investigations progress.

The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, ordered continued patrols and monitoring of the highway to ensure the safety of commuters.

In a related development, the commissioner intercepted a group of 20 individuals of unknown origin during his weekend patrol near the Ogun-Oyo boundary. The group, seen disembarking from a truck, had no clear destination for their movement.

A search of their persons and belongings revealed dangerous weapons, including daggers, knives, cutlasses, and suspected charms.

The commissioner ordered their immediate detention and directed the DPO to conduct thorough profiling of the suspects.

Anyone found culpable will be swiftly charged to court, Ogunlowo stated, reiterating his commitment to proactive policing and community engagement. He assured residents of the command’s intensified efforts in crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and rapid response.

He further urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation, emphasising the command’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
