An official of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LASTMA) was reportedly killed yesterday following a collision between a waste truck and a registered commercial (yellow) minibus popularly known as (korope) in the Ketu area of Lagos. Gathered that the driver of the minibus, marked AGL 97 YK, who ran into the parked LAWMA truck, also sustained injuries in the incident.
Preliminary investigations at the scene indicated that the accident occurred due to reckless driving of the minibus and carelessness on the part of the parked compactor truck.
The truck did not indicate parked status with a C-Caution sign at the required position, thereby leading to a collision. Confirming the incident in a statement yesterday, Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said further investigations revealed that in the process of the accident, the minibus hit a LAWMA official performing his lawful duties.
Unfortunately, the LAWMA official died before the Agency’s Response Teams arrived. However, the driver of the minibus sustained significant injuries and was given immediate medical attention by paramedics from the agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit (PHCU) at the incident scene.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the two vehicles involved in the accident were damaged.
According to him, the LAWMA compactor truck was slightly damaged at the rear. He stressed that safety measures were activated at the incident scene during the recovery operation to mitigate against any secondary incident. A Search and Rescue Operation was also conducted to remove the injured driver.
He said: “Following distress alerts at 11:59 p.m., on Thursday, March 31, 2025, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans from the Command and Control Centre, Alausa.
“Upon the arrival of LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team at the incident scene by 12:07.a.m, it was discovered that a registered commercial (yellow) minibus popularly known as (korope) registration number AGL 97 YK, collided with a parked Lagos State Waste Manage Authority (LAWMA) truck, with an unknown registration number.”
