The excitement is building as countdown to the 11th annual Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) by MultiChoice that celebrates the best in African film and television begins.

With talented nominees from across the continent vying for the top prize, the anticipation is palpable. The stakes are high and so is the suspense as the ceremony approaches. The question on many lips is “who will be crowned the ultimate winner?’

Scheduled for Saturday, May 10, this year’s event after the grandeur of last year’s edition is shaping up to be a spectacular gathering of talent and creativity. Here are six things followers of the prestigious awards eagerly anticipate ahead of this year’s awards, which have the most memorable event on Africa’s entertainment calendar:

This year’s AMVCA is set to span four days, from May 7 to May 10. This extended format aims to provide a more immersive experience, allowing for a variety of events that celebrate achievements in film, culture, fashion, and music.

In a move to recognise the integral role of music in film, the award organisers have introduced the ‘Best Music Score’ category. This addition highlights the importance of musical composition in enhancing cinematic storytelling.

The list of nominees showcases a rich tapestry of talents across various categories. Notable films like Lisabi: The Uprising, Skeleton Coast, House of Ga’a, My Fairy Tale Wedding and Freedom Way with their nominations are expected to be strong contenders on the night.

This year, the AMVCA will allow the public to vote in certain categories. This empowers viewers to have a say in recognising their favourite performances and productions. Voting is open until May 4, via the Africa Magic website.

The 11th AMVCA will feature two honorary awards – the ‘Industry Merit Award’ and the ‘Trailblazer Award.’ These accolades aim to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the African film and television industry.

The grand finale on May 10 will be broadcast live across all Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv. This is to ensure that audiences across the continent join in the celebration of African cinematic excellence.
