UNIZIK suspends SUG election over unresolved grievances

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has suspended the conduct of the 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government (SUG) election, citing unresolved grievances surrounding the electoral process.

The announcement was made through an official statement signed by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations Officer, Njelita Louis, and shared on the university’s verified Facebook page.

The directive followed deliberations at the institution’s 357th management meeting.

According to the statement, the suspension was deemed necessary to allow the university administration to investigate concerns raised by stakeholders and provide an opportunity for fair hearing.

“The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, at its 357th meeting held recently, has directed the suspension of the 2025/2026 Students Union Government Election,” the release stated.

“This decision has been taken to enable the management to address all grievances surrounding the electoral process and ensure that all concerned parties are given a fair hearing.”

The university further directed all relevant authorities to comply with the decision and pledged to work towards resolving the issues that prompted the suspension.

No new date was announced for the rescheduled election. The development has drawn mixed reactions from students, some of whom had raised complaints about transparency in the run-up to the polls.
