Anambra seals Nnewi maternity home over alleged illegal operations

Anambra State Government has sealed off Madonna Mercy Maternity and Clinic, located at Uruagu Quarters, Nnewi, in Nnewi North Council Area, for allegedly operating illegally.

Acting Director of Medical Services in the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, who led the operation to the facility, alleged that it had been sealed for operating illegally since 2018 and was operating with unqualified medical personnel in a very dirty and unhygienic environment.

Chukwulobelu noted that the action was taken after a detailed inspection carried out by officials of the Anambra State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit, during which several serious violations were observed, including the inability of the maternity to renew its operational license since 2018.

He stated that the environment was unsuitable for delivering any form of maternal care, stressing that the development leaves the government with no option but to immediately seal the facility to save lives.

He described the measure as part of broader efforts to sanitise the health sector and ensure that health facilities meet the minimum standards in the state.

He further explained that the enforcement fully aligns with the health reforms of the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, whom he noted had made it clear that Ndi Anambra deserved only a safe, professional, and people-centred health system.

According to Chukwulobelu, the government is increasing monitoring efforts across Anambra State. He warned that any facility found operating below standard would be shut down immediately.
