A 300-level student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has died after being shot during a sign-out ceremony held in defiance of a university ban.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso. The deceased, identified as Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was among students who staged the celebration at the market’s football pitch despite a 2023 prohibition on such activities within and outside the campus.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Babalola was shot at the venue and attempted to ride away on his motorbike before collapsing. He was later found unresponsive and taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.

Following a distress call, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs notified the Oyo State Police Command in Ogbomoso, leading to the deployment of officers from the Monitoring Unit and the Area Command.

Items recovered from the victim helped confirm his identity through university records. The university said it is working closely with the police as investigations continue, adding that the deceased’s family has been informed.

In a statement, the Registrar, Mrs Olayinka Balogun, condoled with the family, friends, and colleagues of the late student.
