The police in Calabar, Cross River State, have arrested a 24-year-old man, Joseph Emmanuel, for allegedly beating his 10-year-old daughter to death.
The incident reportedly occurred after the child misplaced her father’s petrol pipe, which he used for his commercial motorcycle business. What began as a disagreement was said to have escalated into violence, resulting in fatal injuries to the girl. The incident sparked outrage among residents, with angry neighbours attempting to lynch the suspect before police operatives intervened.
Emmanuel was rescued from the mob and taken into custody, having reportedly sustained injuries during the incident. Sources said the suspect later confessed to beating the child, claiming he was provoked. The victim was confirmed dead shortly after the assault.
The Cross River State Police Command said investigations had commenced, while the suspect remained in custody. Police sources added that Emmanuel would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
