Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, on Sunday confirmed the death of three persons in a lone auto crash that occurred at the Railway Crossing along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway.
One other person sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident.
The crash involved a white Volvo commercial truck with registration number AYE 977 XA.
The FRSC Ogun State Command spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta.
Odunsi said the crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday and involved seven persons—five males and two females. Of the seven, three died on the spot, one sustained injuries, while the remaining three were rescued unhurt.
He explained that the accident was caused by overspeeding, which led the driver to lose control of the truck before it rammed into a ditch.
According to him, operatives of the FRSC, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) and the Nigeria Police Force were deployed for the rescue operation.
He added that the injured victim was taken by family members to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi for specialised treatment, while the remains of the deceased were released to their families for burial arrangements.
Odunsi said the FRSC, TRACE and police operatives later cleared the obstruction caused by the crash to ensure the free flow of traffic along the Abeokuta–Lagos route.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, warned motorists against night-time speeding and reckless driving, especially at critical junctions and railway crossings.
Fasakin urged drivers to adhere strictly to speed limits in order to prevent further loss of lives.
