Motorcyclist knocks down trader on Oshodi-BRT lane

Victim

A Senior citizen, yesterday, escaped death by the whiskers after he was knocked down by a motorcyclist operating on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane at Oshodi, Lagos.

The man, who trades at Arena Shopping Complex, Oshodi, was lying unconscious before sympathisers saved him from oncoming BRT buses.

He was assisted in picking his wares while efforts were made to resuscitate him. After much effort, he started recuperating gradually but was unable to mention his home address or his name.

Though the motorcyclist waited to attend to him, sympathisers questioned his use of the BRT lane.

A commuter, Gloria Ude, noted that the lane was not created for motorcyclists who move with uncontrollable speed, without minding that many people ignorantly cross the lane without expecting them.

She said: “I think it is good for the government to regulate the movement of motorcycle riders on BRT lanes. They need to know that the lanes are not meant for them and their plying the lane at all is an encroachment.

“The government should be strict on its policies and ban riders from moving recklessly on the lanes not meant for them.”

Noting that prevention is better than cure, she said this would go a long way to saving lives.

“The policy should be across board and should not absolve soldiers and police who take advantage of their uniforms to break the law with impunity, including riding dangerously on BRT lanes meant for prescribed buses. Prevention is better than cure,” a sympathiser corroborated.
