LG advocates cultural heritage, preservation of social cohesion at Gelede Festival

Amid glamour, Lagos Island Local Council has held the 2026 Gelede Festival at the Ilupesi Ground, Enu-Owa Street, Isale-Eko Community, Lagos Island.

The Gelede and Ikoko cultural display features colourful costumes, drumming, dancing and offering of traditional prayers for Lagos Island and its inhabitants.

It commenced on Friday, April 3, 2026, at the Oju Irowo Square, Isale-Eko, with Comical Night, fondly referred to as “Efe Night”, a gathering of adherents who entertain residents and guests with live traditional music and jokes.

In his speech, Chairman of Lagos Island Local Council, Taiwo Oyekan, said the 2026 Gelede festival is historic in nature, considering the modernisation and publicity it received.

According to Oyekan, the festival will foster social cohesion and preserve cultural heritage.

Also speaking, the Olorefe of Gelede Alaketu, Lamidi Adio, said the 2026 Gelede festival 2026 is spectacular.

He, therefore, commended Oyekan for his support and preservation of culture and tradition on Lagos Island.

In the same vein, Mrs Mazeedat Raji said that the festival had placed Lagos Island on the global stage.
