Adebayo emerges SDP presidential candidate for 2027

Leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo

Adewole Adebayo has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 general elections following his adoption at the party’s national convention held in Bauchi.

Adebayo secured the party’s ticket by consensus as the sole aspirant in the race, with delegates from across the 36 states endorsing his candidacy during the convention.

The gathering also produced new members of the party’s National Working Committee.

Addressing party faithful after his emergence, the SDP standard bearer expressed concern over the country’s worsening economic situation, insecurity and what he described as declining democratic values.

He said many Nigerians were struggling with unemployment, poor healthcare and rising hardship despite the nation’s vast resources.

The former presidential candidate criticised political leaders for prioritising foreign medical trips and investments abroad while public infrastructure at home continued to deteriorate. He noted that many citizens still lacked access to quality healthcare and decent living conditions.

Adebayo also raised concerns about the state of security in the country, alleging that Nigerians deserved a more transparent and accountable system capable of protecting lives and property.

Speaking on the nation’s political climate, he warned against threats to multiparty democracy, arguing that Nigeria’s democratic future depended on preserving political plurality and freedom of association. According to him, concentration of political power in the hands of a few individuals could undermine democratic governance.

He further maintained that political parties should remain ideologically driven and committed to national unity and development rather than personal interests.

The SDP chieftain commended Bala Mohammed for supporting the hosting of the convention in Bauchi despite alleged attempts by unnamed persons to frustrate the event. He described the governor as a defender of democratic principles and praised his leadership style.

Adebayo said the 2027 election would provide Nigerians with another opportunity to redefine the country’s political direction and strengthen democratic institutions
