Six terrorists killed in own bomb blast in Borno

What was meant to be a routine bomb-making session for a suspected insurgent cell in Borno State ended in sudden chaos and destruction, after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated prematurely, killing six members of the group instantly.

Security sources said the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Marte Local Government Area, a region within the Lake Chad Basin that has remained a repeated flashpoint for insurgent activity despite sustained military pressure.

According to intelligence-linked accounts, the group had gathered at a concealed site believed to be used for the assembly of explosives intended for future attacks.

The operation, however, took a deadly turn when the device being worked on went off unexpectedly, ripping through the structure and killing the team believed to be handling the assembly.

Among the dead was the suspected team leader, alongside five other members of the cell. The explosion reportedly left the entire makeshift facility in ruins, with additional members of the group said to have sustained injuries while attempting to escape the scene in panic.

The incident is believed to have disrupted what security analysts describe as a small but active explosives unit responsible for producing IEDs used in attacks along key routes and vulnerable communities across the region.

While details remain under investigation, the explosion is seen by security observers as another setback for insurgent logistics operations, particularly in areas where military surveillance and ground operations have intensified in recent weeks.

Authorities are reportedly working to track surviving members of the cell and determine whether the blast will impact broader coordination within the group’s network in the Lake Chad axis.

The development adds to a growing list of self-inflicted setbacks suffered by insurgent factions operating in the North-East, where pressure from ongoing counterterrorism operations continues to reshape their operational capabilities.
