Operatives of the Obalende Division of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a planned kidnap of a Chinese national and arrested two principal suspects in connection with a ₦50 million ransom plot.
The suspects, identified as Chinedu Onwuemena, 41, and Jimoh Ojo, 37, were arrested following intelligence reports about an imminent kidnapping operation along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway corridor.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended on June 9, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. after the Divisional Police Officer received credible intelligence regarding the planned abduction.
According to Babaseyi, the DPO immediately mobilised operatives of the division, including the surveillance team, to the identified location where the suspects were intercepted and arrested before carrying out the crime.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to abduct a Chinese national and demand a ransom of ₦50 million.
Further investigations showed that Chinedu Onwuemena, who reportedly worked within the company environment as an interpreter and driver, allegedly exploited his position to facilitate the criminal plan.
The police spokesperson added that the suspects were working with another accomplice who is currently at large.
“Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspect, while discreet investigations continue to unravel the full extent of the criminal network behind the conspiracy,” he said.
Babaseyi stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the professionalism, vigilance, and swift response of operatives of the Obalende Division, noting that their proactive action prevented what could have resulted in a serious kidnapping incident.
The commissioner also acknowledged the importance of timely intelligence, stressing that it underscores the need for stronger community partnership in crime prevention and security management.
He reassured residents and the business community that the Ogun State Police Command remains committed to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, and the relentless pursuit of criminal elements threatening public peace and safety.
Ojajuni further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting the police by promptly reporting suspicious movements and activities
