No fewer than 1,500 Kano suitors are set to undergo requisite medical screening including HIV and Hepatitis test ahead of government sponsored mass wedding in the state.

Other checks include genotype compatibility, and pregnancy cross examination to ensure healthy and successful marital arrangement.

The wedding program came under the government social welfare initiative designed to support low-income families, encourage marriage, and strengthen family values across the state.

Briefing journalists on Monday, the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa disclosed that preparation for the flagship social security program has reached advance stage.

Daurawa explained that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has allocated about N1.5 billion to support the welfare of the suitors while establishing their nuclear family.

Daurawa said the programme reflects the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to promoting stable homes and providing financial support to intending couples.

According to him, each couple will receive a support package worth N1 million, comprising household essentials such as beds, mattresses, bed sheets, pillows, wardrobes, and food items.

He added that every bride will be provided with N100,000 as seed capital to start a small-scale business, while each groom will receive N100,000 to assist with the payment of marriage dowry.

“Mass wedding was one of the promises made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the people, and he has fulfilled that promise,” Daurawa said.

“He has approved N1.5 billion for 1,500 beneficiaries, who will receive support in the form of furniture, food items, and empowerment packages.”

The Hisbah chief also announced a new guideline requiring beneficiaries to seek the intervention of the Hisbah Board before initiating divorce proceedings, a move aimed at promoting reconciliation and reducing marital disputes.

He further stressed the importance of genotype screening before marriage, warning that incompatible genotypes could increase the risk of children being born with sickle cell disorder.

Daurawa noted that all arrangements for the mass wedding ceremony had been concluded, adding that the board is awaiting Governor Yusuf’s official announcement of the date for the event.
