The internal crisis rocking the Kwankwasiyya movement is finally exposed as Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, the only serving Senator in the opposition camp signaled his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial district, is a close ally of leader of Kwankwasiyya, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and a leading voice against the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to APC.
Senator Hanga, who vowed to sustain his political loyalty with Kwankwaso under any condition had accused Governor Yusuf of betrayal of trust over his realignment with the ruling party.
Although, after Gov. Yusuf dumped the opposition New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Sen. Hanga was one of the leading forces to equally abandoned NNPP for African Democratic Congress (ADC) and subsequently retuned to Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) where Kwankwaso presently running as Vice Presidential candidate.
However, the relationship between Kwankwaso and Hanga hit brick wall recently after the NDC primaries which eventually left Senator Hanga hopeless of any elective opportunities.
Prior to the primaries, Hanga was said to have been positioned for the seat of deputy governor, to peer with former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo who was nominated as Governorship candidate of NDC.
The crisis worsen when when Senator Hanga’s name failed to surface across major lists of consensus candidates for all the elective positions, including his present slot, a development that subsequently triggered internal chaos within the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Kwankwasiyya was said to have imposed his eldest son Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as Governorship running mate and nominated former deputy governor under APC Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna for Kano Central Senatorial district candidate, to replace Senator Hanga.
Gawuna, who until four months ago was Chieftain of APC and had held two Federal government appointments within two years after he lost his Governorship ambition under the ruling party to Governor Yusuf in 2023.
Gawuna, returned to Kwankwaso few months ago after he resigned from the board of Federal Mortgage Bank as Chairman and dumped APC, with the hope of securing the Kwankwasiyya’s Governorship tick.
After the disappointment however, Senator Hanga may have resolved to join Gov. Yusuf in APC following his recent comment on social media where he praised Gov. Yusuf for taken the hard choice despite criticism meted from Kwankwaso.
Hanga, revealed that he’s now convinced with the reasons for Gov. Yusuf defection to APC after realizing who exactly betrayed the trust of the people. The serving Senator posited that ” he hope nobody will also accused him of betrayal if he decided to join Gov. Yusuf having realized who exactly the betrayal of trust”.
He said, “Now if I just left Kwankwaso nobody can say I betrayed anybody, and for anyone to say I betray someone, I will recommend that person should be sent to Goron Dutse Prison or Dawanau Psychiatric hospital.
“When Abba left, if I had followed him that is when they would have said I betrayed Kwankwaso. I stayed with Kwankwaso, and followed him through the nooks and crannies of this country, I was with him. If tomorrow I said I am no longer following him, should that be seen as betrayal, Hanga asked.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the APC in Kano continued to lobby for the defection of Senator Hanga after what they described as huge disappointment suffered from the hand of Kwankwaso.
Leading the party chieftains to Senator Hanga’s home on Tuesday paid courtesy visit to Senator Hanga, Vice Chairman of the party Salisu Maje Gwangwazo appealed to Hanga to join Gov. Yusuf in the ruling APC.
Gwangwazo reminded Hanga the level of humiliation suffered in the hands of Kwankwaso and the subsequently disappointment having committed himself and resources to serve the Kwankwasiyya leader.
“We are here to welcome you back home from medical trip and more importantly sympathize with you on the level of humiliation meted on you by the Jagora. Despite your long standing relationship and support for Kwankwaso, he has clearly shown that you are not relevant to them.
“To prove that you are not relevant to them or let say they don’t take you seriously, Kwankwaso has refused to offer you any elective positions in NDC, despite your suffering. That again has got to prove who is a betrayal.
“Now, we are here to please on you to return and join Governor Yusuf in APC where you will be very important and relevant. We are not promising you the senatorial seat even though the Governor has ensured all members of house of assembly both national and state assembly because the doors already closed. But we want you to return to where you will be valued”. Gwangwazo appealed.
