The management of Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin, on Monday said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mudiame University, Irrua, to serve as a teaching hospital for the school medical students.

Chief Medical Doctor (CMD) of the hospital, Dr (Mrs) Anthonia Njoku who disclosed this while briefing journalists on the seventh anniversary of the healthcare facility, stated that the university has obtained full accreditation of Residency Training Programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from relevant postgraduate medical colleges.

The CMD disclosed that the hospital vision is to build a centre of excellence recognised for special healthcare, medical education, research, innovation, and compassionate, patient-centre service.

She added: “We have deliberately focused on strengthening the hospital from within. We expanded our workforce through the recruitment of doctors, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, and support staff, ensuring that our growing services are backed by the right expertise. In addition, when this administration came on board, 126 members of staff were on contract appointments.

“In recognition of their dedication and contributions, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, graciously approved their conversion to permanent appointments, and today all 126 staff have been successfully boarded as permanent staff.

“One of our proudest achievements is the full accreditation of our Residency Training Programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology by the relevant postgraduate medical colleges. This milestone positions Edo Specialist Hospital as a centre where specialist doctors are not only trained but developed for the future of healthcare in Nigeria.

“In the same spirit of academic excellence, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mudiame University, Irrua, enabling the hospital to serve as a teaching hospital for its medical students. This partnership strengthens our role as both a healthcare provider and a training institution.

“Our commitment to expanding specialist services has also led to significant advancements in patient care. We have established a fully functional Intensive Care Unit, strengthened our diagnostic and treatment capabilities with modern equipment, and are preparing to commence our IVF programme.

“While investing in facilities and equipment, we have remained equally committed to investing in our people. Continuous training and professional development for our clinical, nursing, laboratory, and administrative staff remain central to our strategy because excellence in healthcare begins with excellence in those who provide it.

“Beyond today’s achievements, we are preparing for tomorrow. We have secured additional land for future expansion, creating opportunities for new specialist centres, research, innovation, and advanced healthcare services that will benefit generations to come.”
