From my perspective, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been one of the most exciting tournaments in recent memory. Part of the intrigue lay in the unexpected early exits of several traditional football powerhouses. One after another, many of the giants of world football bowed out, making way for fresh narratives and thrilling contests.

Despite those surprises, I remained confident that France, champions in 2018, would go deep into the tournament. Les Bleus possess an abundance of talented players, and their attractive style of football has long earned my admiration.

The quarter-final between France and Morocco on July 9 was a fascinating contest. French supporters were left anxious when Kylian Mbappé failed to convert a penalty awarded in the 28th minute. It was a disappointing moment, but it never seemed to diminish his confidence or determination. True to form, Mbappé responded in the 60th minute by finishing a well-worked move with a superb goal.

Goalkeepers throughout this year’s tournament also deserve special recognition. Many produced outstanding performances, making crucial saves that kept their teams in contention. France sealed victory with a second goal from Ousmane Dembélé, while coach Didier Deschamps made what I considered a wise decision by substituting Mbappé late in the match to preserve him for the challenges that lay ahead.

The semi-final between France and Spain was played in an atmosphere of intense anticipation. Supporters on both sides believed their team had what it took to reach the final, and the determination was evident in the players’ performances. The coaches and their technical staff also understood what was at stake, knowing that victory or defeat would inevitably shape public perceptions of their work.

From the opening whistle, both teams attacked with purpose, each seeking an early breakthrough. As the match unfolded, however, it became clear that football, as always, rewards not only quality but also fortune.

The second semi-final between England and Argentina was equally dramatic. England took the lead in the 55th minute, raising hopes among their supporters. Argentina, however, never lost belief. Lionel Messi once again demonstrated his class, creating the equaliser in the 85th minute before delivering another decisive pass in stoppage time that led to the winning goal. It was a remarkable comeback that booked Argentina’s place in the final against Spain.

The third-place play-off between France and England was another entertaining encounter. England made a dream start when Declan Rice scored in the third minute. They eventually stretched their advantage to four goals, only for France to mount an impressive comeback that reduced the deficit and reignited the contest. England, however, held their nerve, converting a penalty before adding another goal in the closing stages to secure a 6–4 victory and finish third.

The World Cup final between Spain and Argentina lived up to expectations. Both teams approached the match with determination and discipline, but neither could find the breakthrough during normal time. A yellow card shown to Argentina’s number six prompted the coach to substitute him, a tactical decision that prevented the risk of a dismissal.

With the match still goalless after 90 minutes, extra time was required to separate the finalists. Spain finally found the decisive moment in the 106th minute when their number seven capitalised on an excellent pass to score the only goal of the match.

The final whistle sparked joyous celebrations as Spain lifted the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy, bringing an unforgettable tournament to a fitting conclusion.

For football lovers around the world, this World Cup demonstrated once again why the sport continues to captivate millions. The unexpected results, dramatic comebacks and moments of brilliance reminded us that in football, nothing is guaranteed until the final whistle.
