***Says Nigeria Must Honour Those Who Defend Her

 

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, has warmly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for approving a substantial salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Armed Forces, describing the decision as a historic affirmation of the nation’s gratitude to its defenders.

Senator Yar’Adua said the landmark approval, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, and benefits approximately 250,000 officers and soldiers across all ranks, reflects a leadership that understands that national security begins with the welfare, dignity and motivation of those entrusted with protecting the sovereignty of the Republic.

According to him, the upward review of the Armed Forces’ annual personnel wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion is more than a fiscal commitment; it is a profound national statement that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel are recognised, respected and rewarded.

“At a defining moment in our nation’s security journey, when our Armed Forces continue to confront terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other threats with uncommon courage and professionalism, this bold intervention by President Tinubu sends a clear message that Nigeria stands firmly behind her troops.

“It is an investment not only in the welfare of our servicemen and women but also in the strength, resilience and future of our Armed Forces. A nation that honours those who defend it reinforces the very foundation of its unity, peace and stability.”

The senator noted that the salary increase complements ongoing reforms within the Armed Forces, including the expansion of Army formations and sustained investments in operational capability, aimed at enhancing the military’s readiness to address evolving security challenges across the federation.

He paid glowing tribute to officers and soldiers serving in various theatres of operation, describing them as patriots whose courage, discipline and unwavering sense of duty continue to inspire confidence in the Nigerian state.

“Across our forests, borders, highways and communities, our troops stand as the enduring shield of the nation. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our collective freedom, while countless others continue to serve under the most demanding conditions. Their dedication embodies the finest ideals of patriotism and selfless service.”

Senator Yar’Adua reaffirmed the commitment of the Senate Committee on Army to working closely with the Executive to ensure the effective implementation of the new salary structure, sustained improvements in troop welfare, enhanced military funding, modern equipment and policies that strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.

He expressed confidence that with visionary leadership, a motivated military and the continued support of the Nigerian people, the Armed Forces would remain resolute in defending Nigeria’s unity, safeguarding its territorial integrity and securing a peaceful and prosperous future for generations to come.
