NIWA intensifies safety campaign in waterfront communities

Minister of Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has intensified its sensitisation campaign in waterfront communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), focusing on safety and environmental protection as the rainy season reaches its peak with rising water levels and increased pollution.

Speaking during the Marine Safety and Environmental Protection Campaign in the Abaji Area Council, the Area Manager of the NIWA Abuja Area/Liaison Office, Aisha Eri, said the exercise was aimed at reinforcing safe navigation practices and promoting environmental stewardship among residents living in and around inland waterways.

She said the campaign aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the provisions of federal law, which uphold zero tolerance for water transportation accidents and safety infractions.

Eri thanked the host communities for their cooperation and assured them of NIWA’s continued commitment to protecting the nation’s inland waterways, as well as the lives and livelihoods of those who depend on them.

In his remarks, the Emir of Kwali, Adamu Saba Aguma, commended NIWA for the initiative and pledged his community’s full support in safeguarding the waterways and ensuring strict compliance with all safety regulations.

District heads from neighbouring communities also expressed appreciation for the awareness campaign and pledged to comply fully with the safety measures highlighted during the exercise.

The sensitisation campaign is part of a nationwide directive by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, mandating sustained engagement with littoral communities to improve safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

The Acting Managing Director of NIWA, Umar Yusuf Girei, has directed all Area Offices to accord the initiative top priority.

The Abuja Area Office is expected to extend the campaign to other littoral communities within and around the FCT next week.
