Residents decry abandonment of Ijora road reconstruction

For many residents of Ijora, Badia and Ajegunle, it was great excitement when they heard the Federal Government has awarded the reconstruction of the Costain-Ijora-Marine Beach Road, but it later became a thing of worry for many as no contractor moved to site.

Finally in late 2025, the contractor finally moved to site despite he had been paid since august 2024. His movement was alleged to be a product of some advocacies after some persons got wind that the contractor has been paid.

However, months after moving to site, a considerable section of the road has been reconstructed, some sections have not been reconstructed. From Marine Beach area inwards the Ijora-Badia Roadabout, especially 7up corridor, sections of it have not been reconstructed, leaving the road with varied sizes of potholes and stone filled road.

Also, two portions of a section of that same road, the area before the National Theatre Bridge, inward Costain Bus Stop were not reconstructed. They were filled with varied sizes of stones and one of the portions is already dotted with assorted potholes.

Commenting on the state of the road, especially the non-completion of the Ijora-badia axis, a concerned citizen on facebook, Olatunji Subair, said: “The one done is of a poor quality road. It is already failing in front of First Bank and they failed to construct a drainage on the side.” He wondered who the person that got the contract and the same supervisor in the ministry who approved the job, alleging that the contractor could be a quack for doing a poor job.

Also, commenting, Bukola Ojo stated that it is ironical that the contractor came to site months after he got paid and only to do a shoddy job. “Or, how do we call this when the job that was given was not only completed, it was done haphazardly. If you about to climb the National Theatre bridge, meters to the mouth of the bridge was not done. At late night, louts often loiter around that area, sometimes to beg for money in the day but to rob motorists in the night. This is because that bad portion forces every motorists to slow down completely and move at snail speed.”

Ojo, therefore, pleased with the Federal Government, especially the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently get the contractor to return to site to complete the work it started along that corridor.
