The Democratic and Leadership Alliance (DLA) has called on the National Assembly to commence the constitutional process for the removal of President Bola Tinubu, citing alleged poor implementation of federal budgets and concerns over the management of public revenue.

The party made the call in a statement signed by its National Campaign Council Head of Media and Publicity, Tosin Odeyemi.

DLA said the National Assembly should urgently review the implementation of federal budgets from 2023 to date, particularly amid concerns over the pace of implementation of the 2026 budget.

The party alleged that none of the capital budgets under the Tinubu administration since 2023 had achieved 30 per cent implementation, claiming that the 2025 budget had recorded less than 10 per cent implementation.

It argued that the alleged gap between appropriated funds and actual development delivered across the country required urgent and independent scrutiny.

The party also raised concerns over unpaid contractors, particularly those involved in projects under the Zonal Intervention Projects, despite funds being appropriated for such projects.

“Budgets are not merely political promises; appropriations approved by the National Assembly have the force of law.

“The big question is, why are contractors still protesting over unpaid projects executed for the Federal Government? Where are the funds appropriated for these projects? Where are the trillions of naira that the federal government got from FAAC?” it asked.

DLA further criticised the repeated extensions of previous budgets, saying the practice raised questions about fiscal discipline and the government’s capacity to implement appropriated programmes within the financial year for which they were approved.

According to the party, the 2024 budget was extended into 2025, while the 2025 budget was subsequently extended into 2026.

It said such extensions undermined legislative oversight and made it difficult for citizens to track government spending and assess the performance of public institutions.

DLA also linked the alleged poor budget implementation to the economic hardship experienced by Nigerians despite increased government revenue.

The party cited the removal of petrol subsidy, increased taxation and higher revenue collections, arguing that Nigerians deserved greater transparency on how the funds were being deployed.

“If government revenue is increasing, Nigerians have a legitimate right to ask: Where is the money going?”

“Where are the revenues from subsidy removal, taxation, borrowing and increased revenue collection being deployed? Why are appropriated projects not adequately funded if government revenues have improved?”

DLA urged the Senate and House of Representatives to conduct a comprehensive review of federal budget implementation from 2023 to date and publish details of funds appropriated, released and actually spent by Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

The party accused the National Assembly of failing to exercise effective oversight of the executive, urging lawmakers to reject what it described as a “rubber-stamp” approach to parliamentary oversight.

It said that where investigations establish impeachable offences or gross misconduct, the National Assembly should commence the constitutional process for Tinubu’s removal.
“The Constitution must apply equally to everyone,” the party said.
