Residents Lament Poor State Of Road

For many residents of Ikorodu living around and between Oke Eletu and Ijede, the daily prayer is for the Lagos State government to come fix their road. And it seems government knows about their plight which is why it made budgetary provision for the reconstruction of the road. But the reality on ground is that despite the 2025 budget performance document revealed that N16. 2 billion had been spent to repair and reconstruct the road, the road is still in a deplorable state with residents and motorists bearing the brunt.

According to the 2025 budget performance document, of the N16. 2 billion budgeted for the reconstruction of the road, a large chunk of the money was spent between first and third quarter with only N4.655 million spent in the fourth quarter. The budget document also revealed that while N16.209 billion was provided in the appropriation document, as at the end of 2025, N16,202 billion was spent on the project. According to the budget document, what was left unspent was N6.9 million

The Ikorodu residents along that corridor are however wondering how N16.2 billion was spent on the reconstruction of the road with no noticeable impact on the outlook of the road, especially that it is almost one year that a larger chunk of the money for the road was said to have been spent.

Commenting, a resident, Adebimpe Abimbola, stated that when the government reconstructed the road from Elepe down to Kingsfield, many of the residents thought the government would construct it down to Ijede, but they didn’t. “Then they came back, they did from kingsfield down to Gberigbe. They completed Gberigbe road since 2025, but they have refused to come to Ijede.

“The road is very bad. You do not get bus when you are going home, especially at night. Thank God, it’s not even raining again, but during the rainy season, It was worse.”

Abimbola noted that even the Gberigbe Road that was constructed, the government cannot boast it spent such a huge amount up to N16 billion on that road. “They just completed that road in 2025, and every now and then, they are always coming back to patch it. They used interlocks, yet everytime, either contractors or public works are always coming to fix something on the road.”

Abimbola stated that she is shocked to hear that about N16.2 billion has been spent to fix a road that was not repaired not to talk of complete overhaul.

Another resident, Mr. Ajayi Olokungboye, sharing the pains residents and motorists go through as a result of the appalling state of the road, disclosed that the House of Representative member, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Jimi Benson only did Ewu Owa down to Abule Eko. “They have not constructed it down to Abule Eko, they are just doing gutters. But you see from Gbodu down to Ijede, they did not do anything.

“The road is now worse. Before, Ijede from garage was N700, now it is N1000. Before the fare even got to N700, it used to be N500. It is this bad road that made transporters to increase the transport fare.

Even with the N1000 charge as transport fare, you will wait for long before you get bus. During rainy season, we had it worse. Even with the N1000 being charged, you might not get bus. I always had to go pass Ewu Owa, it is a long journey but it is better. Sometimes, I do stay at work and not go home because of the state of the road.”
