Musicians, scholars, family members, church leaders and friends have paid a glowing tribute to veteran organist, composer and music teacher, Rev. John Adelaja Aina, popularly known as Pa John or Baba John.

Widely recognized for his transformative figure in the music space, he was known for his strategic vision and ability to take music to the next level.

The Musical Tribute, held at the Tolu Odugbemi Hall of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) brought together several generations of musicians and admirers of the late organist, using music to reflect on his contribution to Christian service, musical excellence and the development of younger talents.

Speaking at the event, President of the Centre for Empowerment of the Disabled, Tony Ademuyiwa reflected on Pa John’s significance and the breadth of his influence, particularly his commitment to music and his willingness to invest in others.

For Dean, Faculty of Creative Arts, UNILAG, Prof. Stephen Olusoji, the tribute was an opportunity to recognise the contribution of a significant figure to Nigeria’s musical heritage and to acknowledge the importance of preserving the legacies of musicians whose influence extends beyond their immediate generation.

The Musical Tribute, which brought together several generations of musicians and admirers of the late organist, used the language he understood best, music, to tell the story of a life dedicated to Christian service, musical excellence and the nurturing of younger talents.

The programme featured organ and piano recitals by Seyi Oluyale, Mofolashayo Adekunle, Pastor Segun Olutunmida, Niyi Ọwa, Tope Johnson, Hope Duntoye, Tope Babatunde, Yanmife Ojumu, Babajide Odedeji, Elisha Ogunade and Gabriel Durotoye, among others.

Performances included J.S. Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, David German’s Festive Trumpet Tune and several hymns and other devotional compositions.

A four-hand piano rendition of Dwelling in Beulah Land by Teniola Adenuga and Moladun Adebayo was also featured, while veteran musician and singer Lekan Folayan added his voice to the musical remembrance.

One of the highlights was The Musical Story of John Aina, presented by The Scorers, represented by Tolu Alabi, Lana Alofe and Tony Ademuyiwa.

The second part of the programme featured gospel musicals and further choral and instrumental performances, including Climb Every Mountain, My Tribute, Bi Mo Ba Dele, O God Beyond All Praising and The Holy City.

The CAC National Choir, accompanied by an orchestra organised by Seun, Dare and Mary, also performed, alongside presentations by the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, including the Resurrection Medley by Lisa Morgan and Colonel Bogey by the MFM Headquarters Mass Orchestra.

The Asaph Choir of MFM performed The Name of Jesus, while the Beulah Quartet presented Amazing Grace, Kalikate Zulu and I Have Been Down to the City.

The gathering underscored the continuing influence of Pa John through his students, protégés, family, colleagues and the wider musical community.
