The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commenced a nationwide tour of federal road projects, beginning with an inspection of the Kaduna-Abuja and Kaduna-Kano roads and their impact on students and tertiary institutions.

The tour, according to NANS President, Dist. Comr. Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, is aimed at assessing the condition and quality of federal roads leading to tertiary institutions across the country and identifying areas requiring attention.

The exercise commenced in Kaduna State with an inspection of the ongoing Federal Government road construction project along the Kaduna-Abuja Road, particularly the section passing through the Federal Co-operative College, Kaduna.

Afeez said the road served as a major access route used daily by students of the institution, making its condition important to their movement and welfare.

The NANS leadership subsequently proceeded to Kano State, where it inspected the Kaduna-Kano Road, including the section passing through Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education.

According to the students’ body, the road was found to be in good condition, with improved infrastructure easing movement within and around the institution.

During the visit, NANS engaged students of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education and the Students’ Union leadership on political consciousness and infrastructural development.

Akinteye urged students to remain actively involved in policies and government projects affecting their welfare, stressing that students were directly affected by decisions taken by government at different levels.

He said the road tour was intended to give NANS firsthand knowledge of the condition of federal roads serving tertiary institutions and enable the association to make recommendations where necessary.

The students of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, according to NANS, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for the road project, saying the improved infrastructure had eased their movement and reduced transportation challenges.

NANS also engaged the management of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education on issues concerning students’ welfare, with Afeez commending the Provost, Dr Kabiru Ahmed Gwarzo, for what he described as his commitment to students’ wellbeing.

The NANS president commended the Tinubu administration and Umahi for investments in infrastructure, particularly road projects that connect students to their institutions.

He said students were major users of the nation’s road infrastructure because of their daily movement to and from campuses.

Akinteye  said NANS would continue the nationwide tour across other parts of the country, adding that the exercise would cover federal road projects leading to tertiary institutions.

He said the association would assess the quality of the projects, examine their impact on students and identify challenges requiring government attention.

According to him, the tour would culminate in an official report containing the association’s observations and recommendations.

NANS said it would continue to advocate policies and projects that address students’ welfare and improve the infrastructure supporting access to tertiary education.
