The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway recorded another deadly crash yesterday, with four people killed after a Mitsubishi bus rammed into a moving truck near Straight Gate in Ogun State.

The crash, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, also left one person injured, while three others escaped unhurt.

The incident came amid continuing concerns over the dangers posed by the busy expressway, where speeding, unsafe overtaking and driver fatigue have repeatedly been identified as factors contributing to crashes.

The vehicles involved were a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar, with registration number FGE 753 XA, and an ash-coloured HOWO truck, with registration number T-695 KT.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Sector spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi, said eight people were involved in the crash.

He said the four deceased victims were male adults, while another male adult sustained injuries and three others escaped unhurt.

According to Odunsi, the crash was caused by speed violation, wrong overtaking and fatigue on the part of the Mitsubishi driver.

He said the bus was travelling at high speed when its driver attempted to overtake and rammed into the moving truck.

Odunsi, who is a Chief Route Commander, said FRSC operatives arrived at the scene six minutes after receiving the distress call at 4:33 a.m.

He said the team arrived at 4:39 a.m. and immediately commenced rescue operations.

The injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the four deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

The two vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Isara, for further investigation.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.

Ogunjobi advised drivers embarking on long-distance trips to get adequate rest before setting out and to overtake only when it is safe and permissible.

He also urged motorists to exercise greater caution while using the expressway.

In a related development, four people sustained injuries in another crash near Enyo Kara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway corridor in Ogun State.

The accident involved a Mack truck, with registration number ABJ 355 XG, and a white Toyota bus, with registration number EPE 34 DP.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday.

Akinbiyi attributed the crash to excessive speed and loss of control.

He said TRACE officials, alongside personnel of the FRSC, the police and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), responded to the scene and assisted with the rescue operation.

He added that the crashed vehicles were evacuated from the road and taken to the Ojodu Abiodun Police Station for further investigation.

According to him, the crash initially affected traffic flow along the corridor, but normal movement was later restored.
