Wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to reduce food wastage, improve waste disposal practices and embrace sustainable habits as the country joins the rest of the world to mark the 2026 World Cleanup Day.
 
In a message to commemorate the day, the First Lady said the theme “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities” highlights the need for individuals and communities to recognise the link between responsible food consumption and environmental sustainability.
 
She noted that maintaining a clean environment begins with reducing the amount of waste generated in homes, businesses and communities.
 
Tinubu said the focus on food waste was particularly significant amid the growing challenges posed by climate change, conflicts and disruptions to food production and supply chains globally.
 
She urged Nigerians to be more deliberate in how they purchase, prepare, consume, and preserve food, stressing that reducing waste requires collective responsibility.
 
“I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment,” she said.
 
The First Lady further called for concerted efforts to build cleaner and healthier communities, noting that environmental responsibility was essential to safeguarding the well-being of present and future generations.
 
She added: “Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations.”
 
World Cleanup Day is a yearly global environmental campaign that mobilises individuals, communities, civil society organisations, businesses and governments to take action against litter and waste pollution.
