The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent flood alert to residents in low-lying, riverine, coastal and flood-prone areas.

In a statement on Monday, the Lagos State Environment Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab urged residents in low-lying areas such as Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ajah, and Ogun River communities to prepare for elevated risks from September 19 to 25, 2026.

“Following the seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), I urge all Lagosians, particularly residents of low-lying, riverine, coastal and flood-prone communities, to take the warning seriously and act early,” Wahab said.

“Areas including Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla (Ajah), Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront, Jetty Terminal B, and communities along the Ogun River and other waterways are advised to remain on high alert from September 19 to 25.

“Especially low-lying areas and riverbank communities, including Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto, parts of Agboyi, and other settlements downstream of Isheri Olofin, to remain on high alert during the period 19th to 25th September.”

Wahab advised immediate actions including moving to higher ground, keeping drains clear of refuse, avoiding flooded roads, and relying solely on official forecasts to safeguard lives and property.

The commissioner also called on those affected to take the warning seriously and act early.

“Residents in vulnerable locations should move to safer and higher ground whenever necessary and should not wait for floodwaters to rise before taking action. No property is worth risking a life,” he pleaded.

Wahab said the Lagos State Government is intensifying monitoring of rainfall and river levels and will continue to work with relevant agencies to strengthen flood prevention and response measures.

He also urged the residents of Lagos to keep drains and waterways free of refuse, avoid walking or driving through flooded areas, and rely only on official flood forecasts and advisories.

“Our priority remains the protection of lives and property. I encourage everyone to remain calm, vigilant and responsive to safety instructions as we continue to monitor the situation,” Wahab added.
