Former two-term Senator representing Abia Central, Nkechi Nwaogu, has rejected the claim by the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that she remains a member of the party, insisting that she is now a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Nwaogu, who is the NDC senatorial candidate for Abia Central in the 2027 election, also urged the APC to resolve its internal differences instead of seeking to “drag” her back into the party.

Her reaction followed a statement by the Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, who maintained that Nwaogu remains a “bonafide member” of the party.

Aguoru said the attention of the APC had been drawn to a statement by the NDC claiming that Nwaogu, whom he described as “our own Mama APC”, had joined the opposition party.
But responding through her Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Victor Kelechi Onyendi, Nwaogu described Aguoru’s statement as “infantile” and said the claim that she remained an APC member was untrue.

“We find it curious that Aguoru is more concerned about Senator Nkechi Nwaogu than about the situation within his own party — the APC,” Onyendi said in the statement.
He urged the APC to address what he described as internal disagreements within the party before focusing on Nwaogu.

“Before the APC begins dragging Senator Nwaogu, perhaps it should first address the conduct of some of its own candidates who have publicly distanced themselves from the party’s governorship candidate and endorsed another candidate,” he said.

He said Nwaogu remained a prominent political figure in Abia Central and that continued references to her by APC supporters demonstrated the significance of her political profile.

“We make one thing clear: Senator Nwaogu has left the APC, and she is not returning.
“She has chosen the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where she is respected, accepted and is actively participating in the political process,” he said.

Onyendi also said Nwaogu’s supporters regard her as a strong contender in the Abia Central senatorial race.

He advised the APC to concentrate on presenting its candidates and resolving its internal differences rather than attacking Nwaogu.

“Senator Nkechi Nwaogu has moved on. The NDC is her political home, and she remains focused on Abia Central and the people she seeks to represent,” he said.
