3SC never won Continental Cup under Makinde, Oriyomi Hamzat faults Adekanmbi

The Oriyomi Hamzat Campaign Council has faulted the governorship candidate of Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oyo State, Bimbo Adekanmbi, over his claim that Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) won a continental trophy under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.

Adekanmbi spoke at a Fresh FM live programme over the weekend.

The council, through its Director-General, Hon. Tunde Suara, described the claim as false, insisting that the club’s recent return to continental football did not amount to winning a continental title.

In a statement, Suara said Adekanmbi’s claim misrepresented the club’s historical record and called for accuracy in public statements by politicians ahead of the forthcoming Oyo State governorship election.

According to him,  3SC won the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1976 and the inaugural CAF Cup in 1992, while the club also won the West African Club Championship in 1998.

Suara said the club’s recent achievement under the Makinde administration was its third-place finish in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, which earned it qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup after a 27-year absence.

He, however, said 3SC’s continental campaign ended in the preliminary rounds following an aggregate defeat to Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien.

“Returning to a tournament is a qualification milestone; it is not winning a trophy,” Suara said, faulting what he described as the conflation of qualification for a continental competition with winning the title.

The campaign council’s director-general questioned the accuracy of the claim, arguing that public statements about government achievements should be based on verifiable facts.

He urged politicians to provide accurate information during campaigns, saying voters deserved leaders who communicated honestly about the achievements and performance of government.

Suara added that the electorate should scrutinise campaign claims and demand accountability from political candidates.
