The Federal Government has urged Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to explore opportunities to own homes under its 5,000-unit Renewed Hope housing programme in Lagos State.

The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development said it was preparing to open an application platform for eligible Nigerians interested in acquiring the houses being developed in partnership with Harmony Gardens and Estate Development Limited in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

The development follows the groundbreaking ceremony for the project held at Lekki Aviation Town, Yegunda Government Resettlement Scheme, Ibeju-Lekki.

In a statement, the ministry said the 5,000 residential units would be delivered across Lekki Aviation Town, The Parliament and GranVille Estate within 36 months.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, said President Bola Tinubu remained concerned about Nigeria’s estimated 15 million housing deficit, which he said affected approximately 120 million Nigerians.

He disclosed that the Federal Government was considering a nationwide social housing initiative involving the construction of 100 housing units in each local government area, alongside a proposed 100,000-unit housing programme.

According to him, feasibility assessments and costing exercises were ongoing to accommodate variations in construction costs across states and ensure that the proposed developments address local housing needs.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Harmony Gardens, Audullahi Saheed Mosadoluwa, said the partnership was aimed at making homeownership more accessible through structured and affordable payment arrangements.

Mosadoluwa, popularly known as Mr-Ibile said the initiative was not merely about constructing residential buildings but developing sustainable communities where Nigerians could acquire homes through mortgage financing rather than relying entirely on outright payments.

He urged parents seeking to secure homes in Lagos for their children, including those studying, working or planning to settle in the state, to explore the opportunity.

He also encouraged Nigerians living abroad who intended to return home, retire in Lagos or provide permanent accommodation for their families to make enquiries about the programme.

According to him, structured mortgage financing could provide a more practical route to homeownership for Nigerians unable to make full upfront payments.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering the 5,000 housing units within the agreed 36-month period, alongside essential infrastructure and sustainable community facilities.

The project attracted traditional rulers, government officials, members of the National Assembly and representatives of the business community.

Among the traditional rulers at the ceremony were the Onikosi of Ikosi, Oba Samuel Alamu Kehinde Oloyede Onikosi; the Onirete of Irete-Ijebu Kingdom, Oba Abdulganiyu Olusegun Awokoya-Yesufu; and the Oloja of Epe Land, Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun.

The monarchs commended the Federal Government’s partnership with an indigenous real estate developer, expressing confidence in Harmony Gardens’ capacity to deliver the project.

They also acknowledged the company’s contributions to residential development, community welfare and infrastructure provision.

Speaking at the event, Damola Akinyelure of Metroscape commended Harmony Gardens for undertaking the delivery of the 5,000 housing units under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope initiative.

Akinyelure also acknowledged Mosadoluwa’s contributions to the 4,000 housing units reportedly delivered in Karsana, Abuja, describing the involvement of indigenous private developers as important to the country’s housing delivery efforts.

The ceremony attracted representatives of the Lagos State Government, including Hon. Prince Bayo Balogun, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Hon. Noheem Adams, who represented the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Other attendees included members of the National Assembly, officials of the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, traditional leaders and entertainment personalities.

The project is expected to add 5,000 residential units to Lagos State’s housing stock, generate construction-related employment and support the Federal Government’s broader housing delivery programme.

The ministry said formal applications would be subject to the official opening of the application platform, applicable eligibility requirements and mortgage approval where financing is required.

It said the initiative would provide opportunities for Nigerians to acquire homes along the Lekki-Epe corridor through structured mortgage financing and flexible payment arrangements, subject to applicable financing conditions.

Interested Nigerians have been encouraged to begin making enquiries through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) or their respective mortgage banks to understand available financing options.
