Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, will headline the 2026 Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria, as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) honours veteran journalists for their contributions to the country’s media industry.
Oborevwori, who will attend as Special Guest of Honour, is expected to deliver the keynote address at the event scheduled for November 7 at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
It will be held under the theme, ‘Strengthening Democracy Through Responsible Journalism and Good Governance.’
In a statement released by the union, the Chairman of the National Organising Committee, Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, said the event would bring together distinguished media professionals and communication experts to celebrate journalists who have made significant contributions to the profession.
“For once, we want to celebrate ourselves. We are honouring colleagues who have paid their dues in journalism; acknowledge their courage, sacrifices, dedication, excellence and enduring contributions to the noble profession,” he said.
Onayiga described the recognition as different from conventional award ceremonies, saying it was designed to appreciate journalists for their service and contributions while they are still alive.
According to him, “Milestone Recognition of Media Icons is in a class of its own. It is not one of those ‘awards.’ The event is NUJ’s unique way of appreciating and celebrating the service, resilience, sacrifice and integrity of the recipients over the years.”
He also commended the NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahaya, and his team for sustaining the initiative, which seeks to celebrate distinguished media professionals during their lifetime.
The recipients cut across different generations and areas of journalism, reflecting their experience and contributions to the development of the Nigerian media industry.
