Ebonyi owes council pensioners N2b arrears
The wife of Ebonyi State Chief Judge and Chairman Local Government Service Commission, Mrs. Lilian Nwankwo, on Tuesday disclosed that local council pensioners in the state are being owed over N2 billion arrears.
Nwankwo, who stated this in her office during an interview with The Guardian noted that the current administration inherited the arrears from the previous regime, adding that David Umahi’s government is not owing pensioners.
She added that the state government has also paid some pensioners their gratuity and will pay others who have not got theirs when the economy improves, stressing that “among the states in the zone it is only our state that is able to pay gratuity to its pensioners.”
“The slogan of every pensioner is that life is sweet after serving and they expect that after working for 35 years meritoriously, their pension is supposed to be their savings once they are retired so that they can look after themselves and their children and if they don’t get it, it becomes a problem and they keep coming to ask for it,” she said.
